If anyone is having trouble uploading an avitar due to being too large, please follow these simple instructions, for Windows users:
Open the image using Windows Paint. It's a part of Windows - no need to download extra software. To find Paint, go to: Start > All Programs > Accessories. With your image opened in Paint, select Sketch/Skew from the Image menu. In the Sketch section, resize your image accordingly. Try 50% to start. If too small, select Undo from the Edit menu to restore the image back to the original size and try resizing again. It's easy to do, but may take some time to get the hang of it. You, too, can be a photo editing pro with free software already on your computer! |

And if that fails, try this link. No guesswork involved.

I had a problem with the file size even after I had cropped and resized the image. I suppose there was encoded data still in the jpg, such was camera type, dates and so forth. I used "Irfanview" (freeware) to save it as a bmp, then saved THAT as a jpg, and the file size dropped remarkably. It's a workaround (but it worked).
...what if I could read your mind?
