I need information regarding an effect I've only seen a few times: at Lance Burton's show, I believe in Copperfield's Barclay House, and at Nick Norton's show at Silverwood Theme Park. The effect is unusual. Not a show stopper, but still very cool. White streamers fly around the inside perimeter of the auditorium, just over the audience's head. They usually start out from the stage, and end up returning to the stage and zip off stage.
Anything anyone can tell me would be appreciated. Who the first to do it was, it's origins, etc. Thanks guys. |

I use Sean Bogunia's PTS. It's great, programable and will go all over the place. I use a couple of them to make a few things fly over the audience's head. Prior I used a counterweight system that sucked!

I don't know about it's origins but if you check out Sean Bogunia's web site he has something called the programable thread system.

Looks interesting; I've seen it live. I would be interested in seeing what else is out there. I know the first few times I saw it predated his system. And, I need something that can support the weight of a large streamer -- probably 6 foot.

As above noted I believe it is Peter Reveen's son who does this sort of work.

There are 2 different effects. Sean's system is really good if you want a silk (or a few silks) fly around in a programable fashion.
The version Lance used was called a "Space Ghost" and was a single line threaded through a number of smooth anchored rings so that one powerful motorized reel could pull the silk streamer round in a preset pattern going though all of the rings as it was drawn in. The more rings or corners, the more friction. It is a great effect but know that you will have to thread it back through all of those rings to reset it each time. If you have a ring 30 feet up, you will have to have a way to get up there each time. Sean's system uses 3 - 4 motor pods to control the flight of the single piece in 3 dimensional space. Once it is set up and programmed, you shouldn't need to reset anything outside of homing the unit which can be done from the main control console in about 30 seconds. The Mini Phantom is another version of this type of effect but to my knowledge is much harder (if not impossible)to reprogram in the field.

David Seebach taught his system to David Copperfield if I am not mistaken.

I checked w/ Seebach a few days ago and his is a blackout ghost effect where streamers fly in an erratic mannor over the heads of the audience controlled by unseen assistants w/ fishing poles in the balcony.
Ray, great to know -- thank you. So, if I'm understanding correctly, there is one line threaded through large rings. The thread pulls the streamer along and the streamer itself actually passes through the rings, correct? These rings must be fairly large? And of a very thin wire so it's not seen? The method I pictured involved a streamer with multiple lines attached, and many pulleys. A different line per direction -- if that makes sense. One line pulls it out into the audience, another pulls it across the back wall of the house, another back toward the stage, etc -- with each line running through an additional pulley to bring the other end of the line (not attached to streamer) back in the wings so it can be manually controlled. Does that make sense?...what do you think Ray? |

Tyrone Reveen is the man. This is Peter Reveen's son....
I used to hang out with Tyrone a lot when he lived in Vegas. The last I've heard about him, he moved back to Canada.... Not sure.. He had a special effect company in Vegas back in the late 80's. He did a lot of stuff for ZZ top. Like the large kabuki drop curtain that sucked up into the nose of the Egytian pharaoh. This guy is really a creative guy.... He is the one that hooked Lance up at the Haceinda Hotel. This was before David did his stuff. Taylor

Taylor,
The effect you describe of the curtain sucked into the nose of the Egyptian -- similar to another effect I need to accomplish. Not that application exactly -- but close. Can you share any tech insight? |

Brian,
The canival of wonders utilize this method but the curtain gets sucked into a little box on stage. Is this the one you are talking about? I will try to get a demo of it. Patrick |

Yes, you're correct with the rings.
It sounds like Sean's system will allow you to control the silk like you want. It has 4 motor pods and control system. You can program the direction and speed of each motor so by firing the motors sequentially, you can create the flying motion you need. The controller uses real time programming then remembers the sequence for playback. You can have multiple sequences stored and play them back in order. You won't need any pulleys as the motor pods are about the size of a few "D" cell batteries and need one single cable to control them. The other effect of the fabric being "sucked" back into something has been done many times. The most elaborate one is the opening to "O" in Vegas. It can be done a number of different ways including a pulley arrangement and large motorized reels, both of which attach to strong reinforcement strips on the curtain. In the Cirque version, the solenoid releases holding up the curtain are timed to release in sequence causing the curtain to start dropping as the motorized winches reel in the curtain pieces taking up the slack as they fall drawing them into ports and onto the spooling mechanisms. This is controlled by a show control PLC which makes the automated effect very clean. The more manual method can involve a mechanical disadvantage system of pulleys and mechanical releases letting the curtain go. As it is released, a stage hand pulls on one end of the block and tackle pulley assembly drawing in the line very quickly and whipping the curtain through the port. The points of entry and edges will all have to be finished and very smooth to prevent any more wear than necessary to the soft goods. Even in the best of circumstances, it is a very violent effect with a lot of wear associated with it so prepare for a lot of replacement and the expense that goes along with it.

You can make the reel yourself, I used a blow up mattress pump. Works fine and very fast!
