Hi all,
I was wondering about how many phases long is your egg bag routine? I have found that the golden rule of 3 works for me. Once by myself, once allowing the person to reproduce the egg while I hold the bag, and once completely hands off - spectator holds the bag and reproduces the egg.

Three phases
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

3 is always the magic number. It gives the trick the right amount of pacing, 2 is too short & 4 is too long. Think about other phrases:
Coffee, tea or me
Moe, Larry, Curly
Sim Sala Bim
There is something about 3 things together that just seem to make sense.

I do 2 phases.

One with me holding the bag and the volunteer retrieving the egg.

One hands off with the volunteer holding the bag and retrieving the egg.

I then take the egg and produce a finch from it for the finale. Works very well.

But that's kind of like 3. in a way.

even a one phase trick like john carney's could be considered a triplet:
1. vanish
2. appear
3. finch.

... or could it?

You're right Frank. I guess you'd say that my routine has 3 phases, but only 2 are used with the egg bag. I use the cage from my OLEC to produce the finch.

Seriously: I do a preliminary non-magical start talking about how the trick originated in China, then move East, or was it West? to India where the Hindu Fakir's performed. Then I look at the guy helping and say, "I am the Fakir and you are the Fakeee..." (previous line copyright Pete Biro). Then first vanish and reproduction. Second phase is with man and woman holding my wrists... and the woman gets the bag and reached in to find the egg. NOTHING STRONGER.

Curse you Pete!

Is your routine in the Steven's Magic DVD? Sounds like one worth studying, heck any of your routines are worth studying!

I actually just worked out a pretty good presentation during a 2 hour strolling gig last night. I worked the egg bag over 10 times at the gig. I've always loved the egg bag and have always wanted to put in the work since the first time I was completely fooled by it. Last night was the real test after practicing with it for over a month. People went nuts for it. I actually had people come up to me saying "My friend told me I have to see some trick with an egg". I still know where I want to add some bits of business, but it's already a solid worker.
