When on stage and working with the change bag, What do you call it? It does not look like anything that you might find around the house so I am assuming that the lay people are unsure of what it is..... So what do you tell them that it is?
I have used one from time to time in my shows but never thought about this until now.

During my show as I bring out the change bag, I describe it as "a bag" or "bag on a stick." I deliver the line to sound like it's almost an afterthought. I've never experienced anyone questioning it, likely because my show just keeps moving along and most nothing else in my show looks ordinary either.

I almost NEVER use the CB with a handle, just the drawstring bag version. It's "my grandmother's old purse, purple velvet on the outside and black satin on the inside, and over 100 years old". The only time I'd use the handle version is when I need a DOUBLE change, for a mismade flag, for instance, but I almost never perform that, anyway!

I don't use it often, but when I do, I say they were handing them out at church last week. There was even money in it. I passed on the money, but borrowed the bag. Usually gets a good laugh from the adults...

I call it my magic bag. I admit to a serious addiction to collecting these things. Even my puppets sometimes will comment onstage "you sure have a lot of those magic bags!". Since I work primarily in preschools, I rarely get called out on what it does. To this age group, that bag is indeed magic. Heck, I have even fooled some of the teachers with it.....

Devil's advocate here.
Doesn't "magic bag" call attention to the bag? Shouldn't the 'magic word', or 'magic wand' do the trick? That would be the somplest form of misdirection. We are supposed to be misdirecting correct? Its just a bag...on a stick |

I call it my "little red bag, that's red on the outside and black on the inside."
I don't think you should call any other attention to it whatsoever. It's just a red bag. From that point on I focus all my attention on my volunteer. --Jack

I just call it a 'collection bag' which I borrowed from church. Then I ask the kids if they have any money - and some actually put coins in or ask their mums for some!!! Then I turn the bag inside out, unzip it and go into the routine which I'm using it for.

What you call your bag is important and it should have a reason that takes into account your overall show, your character, etc.
Just asking "what do you call your bag" really has no relevance without context unless you're just standing up there doing a bunch of tricks with no theme whatsoever. And if that's the case, perhaps it's a good exercise, and now's a good time to come up with a name that actually makes sense with your entire show in mind. I call mine the "bag of mystery" for a VERY specific reason. "cuz it's funny" is an ok answer to "why" but I think we can do better than that.

I have a small one which is just big enough for a kid to fit thier hand into but not mine.
I turn a silk invisible instead of vanishing it or changing it, for a routine that I do. I call the bag the "Inviso Bag 9000". I tell the audience that it is a brand new modern marvel of scientific technology, straight off the showroom in (insert name of town performing in, or any funny sounding town nearby). S. Patrick |

I sometimes call it my "Magical mix'em up bag". But only when it adds to the routine.
