I miss the days when if a kid got outta line in a public place a parent could (within reason) snatch him up and give a smack on the butt and/or that "look" that said wait till we get home young man! My sons (22 and 25) say that to this day I still have that "look" that commands/demands respect! Then again, my kids STILL refer to their elders as Mr, Missus, Miss, Ma'am, Sir etc. until you give them permission to call them otherwise!

The humor comes from the contrast between the masculine image and the effeminate purse. It is not hinting at homosexuality specifically, and the purpose is not to conjure up some horrible word as Picard said. If a comedian makes a joke about race, it's not his fault if the audience begins using disrespectful slang. This case is even more of a stretch than that, because the "joke", as you say, was not remotely sexual in nature. The child's reaction just shows very poor manners and worse judgment. I'm done with the thread as well Pepka, but I think you handled the situation well, and the child's reaction was definitely not your fault. |
