I'm proud to own two illusions that belonged to Doug, each with unique history.
The first is the Juke Box production which Doug used on the very first live special to produce Bill Cosby. It's an actual Wurlitzer front piece added to a cabinet built by Owen Magic Supreme. I remember being glued to the TV for that special. The other is his Germain Vanishing Gong built by John Gaughan for the last live special, part of the ill-fated sequence with Brooke Shields and Tom Bosley. From what Charles Reynolds tells me, it worked perfectly in rehearsal. During the show Bosley stood in the wrong spot and the offstage assistant missed their cue. Later this prop was used by Blackstone Junior. Looking forward to picking up the new Henning bio. Joe |

I remember when he auctioned off his illusions back in the eighties. A friend of mine bought the baby blue box he used to produce the little puppy in the 1981 television specials with Marie Osmond.

I have the set piece (with trap) that says "Doug Henning's World of Magic" It was used in the concave mirror production (so his stretched painted image is on the other side) The trap is so small (Jarret Method)it looks like a door for a Muppet to stick it's head through!

Rick Walker had Doug's Asrah from the Magic Show - it has since sold to Chase Curtis from Dallas.

It is pretty wild that most of Doug's props are still in service .. one way or another. You would think they belong in a museum .. but most have another coat of paint on them.
I remember years ago seeing Melinda in Vegas using a couple of Henning's props in her show .. just as they were, rainbows and all. Steve |

WhenI toured with David Copperfield back in the mid/late 80's... he had some cases with dougs name on them.. the giant TV screens for close up... and some other stuff.
His Sub Trunk costumes were on sale a couple of years ago.. I wish I bought them.. but I was too cheap even though they were in my price range at the time.. grr. |

Hi Makeupguy,
Besides the giant TV screens, do you know what other equipment of Doug's David Copperfield had out on tour when you were there? I know he had a lot of Doug's equipment remade (Origami, Motorcycle Vanish, etc.). Thanks! |

I remember when I lived in Vegas some of his stuff was in the Magic Movie hall of fame..... The Illusion I remember was the stacking boxes that had the big frame stand so the boxes could slide together and I think he produced Sandy Duncan....
That is the only one I could remember for sure... It was built by John Gaughan... I think Willie Kennedy has a Doug Henning sign in his shop from one of the tours...He worked with doug for yrs...Melinda owned what was called the ABC box... The Dekolta, Egyptain ferro, Sands of time, Walking thru mirror, water levi.... These are effects that I believe that Kirby ended up with... Taylor

Ya Kirby has some of Doug's toys. I remember seeing the Egyptian thrown in his dressing room. I was like .. that's the chair that Doug sat in?? It was very cool to see.
I'm halfway through Doug's biography and it's very compelling. I don't want it to end ... Steve |

Kevin and Cindy Spencer own Doug's "No Feet." I believe they're still using it in their show.
Rick Wilcox was the one who put the Kiddie Car levi on MagicAuction this Spring. He'd featured it in his show for years. Don't know who bought it, though. I seem to remember Brad Ross using the Double Sawing from Merlin in that Disney Magic Show that toured a while back. Shame that Satan's Seat met up with a wood-chipper. That was a really nice piece. Doug's Double Sawing Illusion is being used by myself and Michael Barron in Mickey's Magic Show that is currently touring South America. It's really been
beat up over the years, but it looks good from stage! And I'd have to say that it gets one of the best reactions from anything we do in the show! |

With Steve's post above I thought I might ask.
I have Doug's large (50') starlight back drop with the 2 traps through it. But from origins unknown I also have a red eyelash curtain, an "oriental" style full stage arch made of metallic material lotus flowers, and two scrims (a milky way galaxy, and a "brick" wall) all curtains over 45'. Does anyone know if these originated with the Henning Auction of materials? Blair

I think I have found Doug's Light Bulb Cabinet
#4, that was used in "Spellbound". Currently its in a magician's workshop ... in which he was ready to completely refurb until we talked..now he doesn't want to touch it because its considered an antique.

We 'had' the original Double Sawing, Lion's Bride, Astrah, and some other stuff with costumes and what-not from the original "Magic Show" on Broadway. There were had from Ab Dickson, Paul Osborne and others back in the day...
All gone now. (Hehehehe...) A buddy got one of the Oriental Arch, Sands Of Egypt and some costumes at the auction… I was working so I had to miss that! (Poop!) Oh the memories...
