I have this question floating around in my head: where is the line between "story telling magic" and "bizarre Magic"? Is there a difference?

I have been delighted by someone doing a story about a boy who falls in the pond, all illustrated by paper-tearing a newspaper. It's famous, and I'm ashamed I don't know the name or creator of this oft-done kids routine. It's story telling magic. It ain't bizarre, IMHO!
Sam the Bellhop - storytelling? But why be labelled? Which member of the public cares what the difference is? What is the purpose of knowing the answer to the question? Sure, it might help your own mind understand who you are, as a performer, but it might also stunt your options. And the reason I say this, is that I asked myself the very same question about 12months ago, and after much thought, hand wringing, and soul searching, I realised the answer I've given in the last paragraph. DOWN TO LABELS!!! who's with me?

In my opinion there is a big difference between "story telling magic" and "bizarre magic".
All tricks where you tell "a story" is "story telling magic". That can be a trick for childeren, a card trick with a story, a gambling routine ect. but it can also be a ghost story. Bizarre Magic are tricks that are (mostly) accompanied by a story but it is not necessary for being bizarre magic. However, the CONTENT of a story can be bizarre and then it obvious belongs to the category "bizarre magic". So in my opinion, it are two totaly different notions. Not the fact that there is a story makes something "bizarre. It is the "content" and the "atmosphere that is called up" that it makes bizarre. |

I just went and cut the label off of my mattress. I'm expecting storm troopers any minute now.

I threw away all my magic instruction sheets. Oh, dang! Why did I go and do that? I guess I didn't quite understand the concept.

Rebel that I am, I think there is a difference between doing magic tricks with some stories thrown in (instead of and a huge improvement over <shudder> patter) and bizarre. The difference in my mind is you may see some regular tricks performed in a regular way in a performance that includes storytelling magic, but if I did a blooming silk and an appearing cane, set to vegas music with my bizarre effects I would ask that I be shot, and promptly.
