Somethings that have helped me. I just got started in mentalism but this has helped make since in both the presentation and the technique used. Study body language, sociology and psychology. Communication is also another thing you may want to study as well since a lot of what we say can influence people's thoughts and mental processes.
Don't buy into the myth that NLP is a must. It's not. Understanding body language and psychology can make presentations more acceptable and will help in some way with the techniques.

Ian Rowland has some very good advice on his website. He recommends what he considers to be the best books on mentalism but ends with this basic advice - begin with 13 Steps only. Don't buy any other books until you have studied this one. Develop an entertaining 10 minutes with just the information in that book. If you are unable to do that then save your money and don't buy anything else on mentalism. You are wasting your money and should pursue some other path.
