I did look to see whether this had been asked before, but in my 15 mins searching, I couldn't find anything (bet someone will
![]() It would be a major task now, but is it possible to have members sign up with their real names. It might cut out a lot of the unfortunate comments that fly around some threads, where people are operating under a nom de plume, and say whatever they see fit to say, regardless. Would really appreciate your comments. Dave

Dave, why I understand your concern, how do you know that a name is a real name and not some sort of alias, your name Dave Andrews could easily be your stage name or something else. I use Pabloinus, but I could easily changed for Pablo Williams and you would never know if either one is my actual name.
I am not so sure you can solve that, |

Dave, this has been discussed a lot in one forum or another here at the Café. It's a double dilemma: people ought to have a reasonable chance at knowing who they are talking to if we are going to have reasonable discussion; performers, however, often use stage names.
But I agree that it's a problem having people sign up to the Café with names like "ididabadmurder", who is currently listed as the newest member of the Café. I clicked the name, however, and get a message that inclines me to think the moderators are on top of things. The situation isn't perfect. But perfection isn't possible. Unless you follow the Too Perfect theory...but that's another thing altogether. ![]() |

Dave, we understand that many of our members do not read the rules when they register but here is an excerpt from those rules regarding ID's.
Quote:
Choosing a username: While we'd like members to use their real names, can you imagine the situations that might come up if say David Copperfield or Chris Angel registered using those names? Also, as mentioned, there's no way to guarantee that a name being used is actually a person's real name. We have many members who have registered using a name such as Richard Henry when their actual name is Bob Smith. Nothing would flag anyone that Richard Henry was an alias, espcially if they don't provide a web address or something to be checked. Obviously a name such as Ididabadmurder as Stoneunhinged mentioned would be questioned. Very often we remove new members immediately with no questions asked when the user name is questionable.

Many thanks for all your answers, most appreciated, and I now fully understand why it would be an impossibility.
