I did look to see whether this had been asked before, but in my 15 mins searching, I couldn't find anything (bet someone will Smile

It would be a major task now, but is it possible to have members sign up with their real names. It might cut out a lot of the unfortunate comments that fly around some threads, where people are operating under a nom de plume, and say whatever they see fit to say, regardless.

Would really appreciate your comments.

Dave, why I understand your concern, how do you know that a name is a real name and not some sort of alias, your name Dave Andrews could easily be your stage name or something else. I use Pabloinus, but I could easily changed for Pablo Williams and you would never know if either one is my actual name.

I am not so sure you can solve that,

Thanks for your reply.
You are right, of course - why didn't I think of that Smile There just isn't any way, is there!
Glad I asked, though, and even more pleased that I got your reply.

Regards

Dave (that is my real name Smile )

Dave, this has been discussed a lot in one forum or another here at the Café. It's a double dilemma: people ought to have a reasonable chance at knowing who they are talking to if we are going to have reasonable discussion; performers, however, often use stage names.

But I agree that it's a problem having people sign up to the Café with names like "ididabadmurder", who is currently listed as the newest member of the Café.

I clicked the name, however, and get a message that inclines me to think the moderators are on top of things.

The situation isn't perfect. But perfection isn't possible. Unless you follow the Too Perfect theory...but that's another thing altogether. Smile

Dave, we understand that many of our members do not read the rules when they register but here is an excerpt from those rules regarding ID's.

Quote:
Choosing a username:

The Magic Café is home to thousands of magicians, including many of the top names in magic. As leading professionals in the magic industry, most if not all use their real names. Though not a requirement, I would encourage you to do so as well.

First, folks are more likely to answer a post made by someone named Joe Smith, as opposed to a user name such as Magicman874574.

Second, by using your real name, people will take what you have to say or offer on a more serious level.

That said, please know that any username is subject to approval by The Magic Café, and may be edited, changed, or removed at anytime, and with no warning or reason given, especially if the name is either inappropriate (e.g, contains profanity, etc) is too long (names that are longer than normal will sometimes affect our forums (stretch them wider than normal) or is a name that implies the user is here for reasons other than helping other magicians (e.g, The Masked Magician, I hate magicians, etc).

If you feel you must use a handle of some type, please keep in mind that this is a family site, so please select a username that would be appropriate in that context.

While we'd like members to use their real names, can you imagine the situations that might come up if say David Copperfield or Chris Angel registered using those names?

Also, as mentioned, there's no way to guarantee that a name being used is actually a person's real name. We have many members who have registered using a name such as Richard Henry when their actual name is Bob Smith. Nothing would flag anyone that Richard Henry was an alias, espcially if they don't provide a web address or something to be checked.

Obviously a name such as Ididabadmurder as Stoneunhinged mentioned would be questioned. Very often we remove new members immediately with no questions asked when the user name is questionable.

Many thanks for all your answers, most appreciated, and I now fully understand why it would be an impossibility.
