I enjoyed most of his postings and I appreciated his experience, but he was bad about misinterpreting other people's posts, overreacting, etc., almost to the point of ranting. He once jumped all over me for providing an honest, negative review of Paul Osborne's Mini Kub Zag plans, even though I prefaced it by telling about all of my GOOD experiences with Paul's plans. Although I was correct in my assessment, I went out of my way to try and smooth things over with him on this and several other occasions.
I miss his contributions...

Guys, this is nuts. Rai is a friend who I have known for years. Do I agree with everything he says? No. Does Rai have a temper? Sure does and he knows it. But this does not negate his valuable experience and opinions. I have seen Rai work live for magicians and in circuses. He knows how to play the house.
Las, put up the videos to show this guy is more than just pipe dreams or words. He has been there and done that. A lot of guys can drop names but Rai can prove he knows them all. I wonder how many guys on this forum were making over a $1000 a day doing magic for 9 or 10 months a year? That is the measure of a real pro not arguing inane points over some forum. If Rai every gets is website up or finished his memoirs, some people are going to real enjoy his stories and experiences. He is contributing a column to the Newest Tops magazine for those that care to check it out. I respect others opinions as much as I can. I realize there may be more than one way to do something. What works for you may not work for me. But if it works for you great. I think more guys on this forum need to try to keep that in mind. There is more than one way to fly a kite. Richard

Senor Rai is undeniably a master showman. Circus is one of the toughest gigs. You perform in the round with lots of distractions, people far up in seats and you have to command attention. Not many can pull this off. Note also his unique take on many effects and how he adapted them to work this environment. Very impressive.

Thanks Las for including the references to Senor Rai performances on Youtube. It was great and I hope that Senor Rai will reconsider and give us the opportunity to listen and view his many years of successful professional magic experiences.

I doubt if Rai will ever be back on this forum. I only hope that he gets his memoirs done soon. There are lot of stories that should not be lost. And I am talking about real celebrity stars. Not just magicians.

Las,
Thanks for posting the videos. Working a circus is one of the toughest venues. Rai could hold an audience's attention even with all the distractions. He is a classic. Dave
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

I agree, working a circus is tough. My wife and I spent three years working for a circus. The conditions are far from ideal. You have to deal with mud, dirt and grass in addition to all the cables and power cords on the floor. Senor Rai was a master at performing in the circus. His props were colorful his assistants well trained and knew what do do if something went wrong. He commanded the ring. His costumes were flashy and flamboyant. His actions and gestures were large so he could communicate to the people that were the farthest away. He knew what it took to make the show work and entertaining. He is a true star.

WOW! You need sunglasses to watch the video's! This is the first time I saw Senor Rai perform. And I'm surprised. I'm absolutely a fan now!
I noticed a Rai on this forum who was just telling things as they are. Some only in his mind, but then still... I don't like people who always agree with everyone, who try to please everyone. I just received a newsletter from Jeff McBride. That mail started with: "I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is - try to please everybody." I like people who dare to stand up and give their opinion. The magic needs those people at this moment. I saw him being attacked and he responded, in his own way I think. But that doesn't kill magicians. I would love to see more of his magic! And I love to read or hear his stories! EVI |

Over the years, there have been few people who are willing to call it as it should be called. Bill Larsen reviewed acts at conventions in the manner. John Mendoza reviewed products in Magic Manuscript that way. Senior Rai has proved his knowledge by the actions of his body of work. It's too bad that his frankness sometimes gets in the way of his input.
And yes, Rai has a temper but I still can call him a friend in spite of that. Richard

Since I was 7 years of age (back in the 1970’s), there have been only a few performers who stood head and shoulders above the masses of magicians.
There were even fewer who I would consider “showman”. Senior Rai is one of only three I consider a real showman, aside from myself of-corse . Not only has he successfully performed in the Circus environment, but he also has dazzled thousands on the stage, in review shows, and even in night clubs in his early carrier. He has been dubbed the “Million Dollar Ring Master” and the “Liberace of Magic” for good reason…..because of his glitz, staging, and the ability to “sell” his magic AND himself to the audience. Take a look at the youtube videos and turn up the volume a bit so you can listen to the very audible audience reactions…. In addition to his performances, he is also a very well known and amazing costume designer. Senior Rai “IS” truly a great showman. A bit provocative, but then again….if he was just another of the status-quo, he would not be….well…the great, the inimitable, the incomparable, the one and only master magical showman, Senior Rai. |

Senor Rai is fantastic! I watched the videos again this weekend and really appreciated the fine touches that elevated the performances from good to great. He's the consumate showman. Lot's to learn here.
Be sure to check out Rai's monthly column in The New Tops magazine. http://www.topsmag.com. Fun and very informative! You'll also find columns by Café contributors Steve Chezaday and Richard Hughes and a monthly column by MUM cover boy, David Seebach! |

I still want to hear all of his stories because I really think we can learn a lot from all his magical stories. Perhaps he could write some essays in the Buffet? :-D
