Richard,
As I watched the DVD, I was wondering why the numbers were not facing the audience during your presentation of the Magic Square. Whenever I have performed the "trick," the numbers were always facing the audience. My initial reaction was that something was lost because by hiding the numbers from the crowd, and I did not particularly care for it. However, when you revealed the square, I was impressed with the numbering. Then, when I watched the explanation, I was surprised at the methodology. With what is gained with the reveal (where you don't get a bunch of low numbers coupled with four larger numbers that follow a pattern), I quickly became a fan of this version and will look to learn this forward and backward. I am one who does not carry pocket effects with me because I perform shows, not tricks. However, with this in my arsenal, it can be performed anytime, anywhere if needed. Thanks, Bobby

Bobby,
You probably could do it with the audience watching you fill in the numbers ... that is the way Corinda explains it in the book and his method is related ... but I decided to do it the way I did for a couple of reasons besides hiding the method. First, I actually AM facing the audience. It's the numbers that are not! I wanted it to be more of a "Let me just do this real quick for you and then I will show you what I did" type of thing. Second, in order to disguise the sequence, you would have to jump around and skip back and forth to hide what you are doing. I really didn't want to get into that complicated a routine. But if you want to do it that way yourself, skip every other number, or every third number and go around the sequence to fill them in. But I really think that may be more than necessary. But again, its up to you. What I wanted here was to inspire other ways to do things. Like the Amazing Memory Demonstration. I already did it on ETMMM, but wanted to give it a different flavor this time around, so I approached it differently. As I said before, if someone says, "I think it makes more sense to do it this way" that is great. I WANT people to come up with their own ideas! Frankly, I actually do these routines differently myself depending on the situations I am working in. These exact routines were designed for the L&L setup and what I had to work with. Richard |

Step 13 in the book is Patter and Presentation. It appears to me Step 13 appears throughout every DVD.

I'm VERY pleased with something Richard said in the disc covering Step 3!
Nowadays Mentalists seem to have to explain their 'ability' as reading body language, NLP, micro-expression, voice inflection,etc.. Look at the work of Derren Brown for an abundance of this sort of presentational style. I have often wondered why they so strongly wish to weave that (well, let's face it) FALSE methodology in their presentations of their effects. It could be that they wish to appear either more intelligent or perhaps more educated than most regarding non-verbal communication.. It could be they want to link their demonstrations to something grounded in reality.. It could simply be because they have some ethical issues over saying it's 'real'. I don't know.. but Richard said something in Step 3 that Bob Cassidy has also apparently believed and mentioned in one of HIS DVDs. While Richard says to present things as you wish, he also says that for HIM the presentational angle is NOT to focus on the apparent NLP methodology, but rather to simply get out there and perceive thoughts. He said the entire APPEAL of mentalism to a lay audience is that they believe it IS real and maybe they TOO have this ability tucked away somewhere in their minds. The greatest point Richard makes is that people do NOT want to hear that they have to study non-verbal communication for years on end to be able to do this stuff (ie. mind reading) but rather it may be an inherent gift that we may ALL have!! It just needs to be discovered! Brilliant, Richard! Looking back on the performance work of my idol, Kreskin, one sees that he has NEVER claimed he was doing NLP, body reading or psychological influence.. He simply perceived thoughts and got on with it. I'm beginning to think I really am from the 'old school' of magic. I am a relatively young performer (I'm 39) but I refuse to jump on this Derren Brown bandwagon in which EVERYONE is a master of body language and non-verbal influence. I put on what I believe to be a classic style Mentalism concert which is light on the NLP angle and heavy on the entertainment aspect. I have not yet seen Richard's disc on the 13 Step of Patter and Presentation; perhaps Richard covers his thoughts their as well, but the bottom line is.. Thanks Richard, for putting into words your thoughts on this non-psychological type of presentation! Paul Pacific

Again, thanks for producing such a wonderful DVD series. The owner of the local magic show swears by 13 Steps. He has ordered the set and I can't wait to get his opinion on them. [/quote] I(Paul Pacific) have watched ALL 12 hours of the DVDs and loved them. Just as I figured, Richard (whom I love) did a fantastic job bringing 13 Steps (which I ALSO love) to life! Just curious... Who was the owner of the local magic shop and what did he think of the DVDs? Paul Pacific

He just got them in and hasn't had a chance to look at them. His name is Larry and the store is Be Amazing Magic Shop
One advantage he has over Osterlind, that he uses with devastating effect, is the fact that he used to work store security at one point and had to learn how to size up people very quickly. Other magicians and I have watched him nail a person using the center tear to reveal the name of a person the participant was thinking of! He revealed characteristics about the person that were (supposedly) known only to the spectator. Everyone was stunned! After the person left, nearly everyone was congratulating him on how well he did.

Let us know Larry's reaction to the DVDs. I talked him into carrying Osterlind's earlier DVDs by demonstrating some materials to him, and was delighted to see them sell quite well. Spent some great hours in that barber chair of his, when I was recovering from surgery.

I'm just glad his shop is still there to allow me to go and learn some of the great stuff that is out there. I find it even more amazing that, while there have been different magic stores in Columbus, under a wide variety of owners, the city really hasn't gone without a magic shop of some sort in the many years I've lived here.
Sadly, one of those shops failed because the owner not only moved, but changed the name of his store. Two devastating blows in one shot. Nobody could find him anymore.

Not to mention the sadness of one shop closing because the kid who ran it, died.
Clyde, my eyes are worse than ever, and I can't figure out which of the three figures in your photo is you. Help a blind old guy out, would ya? *jeep! --Grandpa

I'm the big, fat, white blob. The green one is Jose Jalapeno (on a stick) and the one on the right is Jeff Dunham. The picture was taken during the 2006 VENThaven ventriloguism convention. My little dragon, Micro Draconus (Mike for short) is sitting on my shoulder to the left of me.
Now I guess it is time I seriously consider updating my avatar, as I do have one of me with Michael Ammar.

AMAZING !!!
I have just watched the first video, and will watch and study it again a few times the coming days before I move on to the next one. I expect the other five to be just as good, and it goes without saying that this series will remain as one of the most important landmarks in mentalism. I could of course have pasted in Greg's glowing review here, but I guess it is sufficiant to just say "Yes. Absolutely!" Sven

I ordered my copy of 13 steps immediately after I heard from it here in the forum. Reading all those those glowing reviews here, I have to say I can't wait for it to arrive...

I too have finished the first DVD in the 13 steps series. I love the book, and now this collection of finely filmed dvds help 13 steps come to life for me. I have been a huge fan of Richard Osterlind for a very long time. I can honestly say I own just about every publication he has created. His books, pamphlets and plethora of teach in dvds are amazing. For those who learn better with the help of dvds, this collection can not be beat. The 50 year old 13 steps has just become better understood. I can not over state that this box set could and should sale for far much more than what it is going for. DO NOT WAIT. Order it, study it, and perform it.

Still waiting patiently for the DVDs to arrive here in the UK. I've received my signed photo and email access, but no DVDs...is this normal?

Vir_Lucis_Ex_Deus,
If you ordered from us, it is entirely possible that Jim filled the DVD order while I sent the photo separately. Since that would be a letter, it tends to get through customs faster. Richard |

Richard,
Without studying 11 pages of this thread to find out - is your email service going to be just an individual answer to each member's question or are those questions and answers also going to be posted for the members to study? It seems that it could be an educational tool to see where other members are finding their questions from the material presented in the dvds. Thanks, Don |
