Just talk to people. Forget about being entertaining for the moment and just be approachable.
Smile, say hello. Exchange names. Shake hands. Then, tell them to watch the coin for a moment.... |

Wasn't there a woman who got into a box and blew herself up?
Maybe you could pay the audience to watch...

I did a Google search for "Street Magician woman lady" and that led to
a blogger write-up about Billy Kid: http://ham1.co.uk/blog/2008/07/06/canadi......in-bath/ And her web site is: http://www.billykiddshow.com/ Seems she goes on to the street at times but is mainly working in other areas of magic. Gazzo gets a mention: fancy that! Most things being equal, I wonder if a woman street magician gets more crowd than a man on the job.

G'day
The people mentioned by Ark are all worth checking on the subject of attracting an audience. Jimmy Talksalot reflects on this subject on his blog and in his book with reference to his own experience as well as Cellini's ideas and methods. Billy Kid is featured on Gazzo's DVD on Cups and Balls as one of his students and she is good. Bob Latta (aka Troppo Bob) |

Be patient, set a s..l..o..w pace starting off.
learn a few names and use them. If you feel like you are rushing through, so you do not lose the people you do have, slow down again. then keep doing your show over and over. ray |

When I first started on the street, I couldn't get more that 5 people to even pay me any attention until I realized that I wasn't dressing like an entertainer. I used to just go out in my jeans and tshirt and wait for people to come up to me or try to call them in, but since I just looked like an ordinary schmo it didn't work bery well at all. Once I put on a fedora and some suspenders, the tourists suddenly could identify me as a busker, and the crowds started. Look the part, wear the uniform as it were, and it should help out greatly.

My Hunter Knot Revisited routine was designed as a Traffic Stopper.
Though primarily for Trade Shows and large Roving events it would work equally well in a street / busking situation. |

I like to use a loud out fit. Check out most of the photos in the "Photo" section: http://detroitmichiganmagician.com/ When the crowds arrives, the next step is to keep them with you.

Dynamike,
You are an inspiration my man. I know you've seen the Gazzo stuff, the Cellini stuff, and the Kozmo stuff, and you are one of the FEW who got the most important thing. BE YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!! You are not doing a knock off of one of the earlier mentioned acts you are doing your own thing and using the valuable tools described in the videos, books, lectures, and applying them to stuff you are all ready doing. Attracting a crowd? BE ORIGINAL, then be colorful, funny, and willing to work at it. I look at those photos Mike and all the people are watching YOU. I see so many photos and videos of guys and teh audience looks like a yard sale. Heads and bodies everywhere, no point of focus, no interest in the eyes of the audience. It's obvious to me from those photos that you are doing well, good on you Mike! You are giving them a whole lot of Mike and that is the MOST important thing. You also don't have to worry about anybody showing up at a festival and they are going to be doing a variation of your act. On that note and I'm just throwing this out there: The books and videos from guys like Mario, Gazzo, Cellini, and Kozmo, are meant to give you an insight as to what works and what doesn't on the street. They also give you an inside look at the creative process that went on in developing the act that they currently do. I don't just think it's wrong but I think it's detrimental to the guy learning to street perform to try and do Gazzo's act or any of the others word for word. I mean, if you are learning to do magic as well as street performing duplication is part of the learning process. BUT a guy who wants to do it for a living or a guy like Mike who was all ready a pro and had an act would be MUCH better served to learn the fundamentals, take the stuff they all ready know, and go out there and do what they all ready do well and learn to apply it to the street. It's important, more important than you might think. Imagine seeing Gazzo, or Kozmo, or Mario, or Cellini, or Charlie Caper, or Chris Capehart, standing in your crowd during a show and being able to feel proud about what you are doing instead of ashamed. I saw some video from Covent Garden on youtube the other day and it made me want to puke. Five guys doing the same act...that wasn't theirs to begin with. You'll find a lot of pork pies on the internet about street performing these days. You can't go wrong with anything from Gazzo and Mario and Kozmo avoid the pork. Take a look at Mike...That's how you do it. I'm not saying you need to buy a flashy suit and a Chair suspension, I'm saying BE YOURSELF do the things you all ready do well. There are too many hacks on the street at the moment but trust me, there is PLENTY of room for original acts and audiences CAN tell the difference. WELL DONE MIKE! Thank you for the kind words my friend. Many members think my act on the streets will match my lousy post on the Café. As you can tell by the pictures there is a big difference. "Never judge a person's act by his post".
When I saw the professional acts of Kozmo, Mario, Cellini and Talksalot on You Tube/DVD, I decided to copy what they were doing, BE YOURSELF. |

Hi, Dynamike. I think in the sentence above you meant to type, "I decided NOT to copy what they were doing."

I had a feeling someone would not get it. Let me be more specific. One way Kozmo, Mario, Cellini and Talksalot made it to the top is by being themselves. Since they were being themselves, I want to be myself too. BE YOURSELF is what I decided to copy from them. I did not decide to copy their act/routine/tricks because I wanted a different act by BEING MYSELF, (as what they did).
P.S. Please do not judge me by my lousy post. |

Dear Sam,
I call it gapers block. Once you start with someone, people will gather. Just like on the expressways, you see flashing lights and everyone slows down to see what it is. Go for it!! |

Ottp,
that is not always the case. very few times have I got a crowd by starting to show magic to some one. Be friendly and always invite the people walking by. Once you have about 10 people. Hold off from doing the show just be friendly and entertaining then the crowd will grow by itself. |

I never start my acts off with one person. I always look out for a group of at least three walking together. Usually it is a family. I always start with the kid or teenager in that group as my assistant. The crowd will build quicker because it gives a head start.

Crowds are easy to draw, I am always wondering why so much attention is put on this task on these forums. I will tip what appears to be the little known secret.
If you were to watch my act in say October and judge me by my crowd you would think I was one of the worst buskers in the world. And if you were to watch my act in July and judge me by my crowd, you would think I was one of the best buskers in the world. Getting an audience starts with being in the right place at the right time. The marketing director will have more say over the size of your crowd, or perhaps the president of the chamber of commerce, or maybe the local merchant association. Next to the weather, they will have the most control over the size of your audience - which will be determined by how well they promote your venue. If you find the right spot ... and are there at the right time ... then you can just say "I'm gonna go ahead and start the magic show now" and get 10 people to come right up to you. You could work that same pitch a few hours later and spend 10 minutes trying to get 10 people to watch you. Timing. Be in the right place at the right time. Getting the crowd is the easy part, getting them to stay and getting them to pay are the hard parts. I wish we had as many posts on those topics as we do on crowds. -JoeJoe
