I want to improve on some stuff in the shows I am doing. I have been dieing to get the water levitation, but it being to big and heavy, and expensive, was an issue.
Well, I actually have a way to work around it now! the only thing that I am missing, is the actual levitation. The platform I will be getting for a pretty low cost you might say, and the water jets, I will have to work around it, and make it how I want it. A little bit of work, but worth it. So, I just need some help in finding on where I can purchase the actual levitation device. The most common one I've seen with the water levitation is a 360 version. such as the one D.Copperfield performed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWH7BghDjB8 & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fb2K4AB3ns&feature=quicklist even this is good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ83YmPqJ2w&feature=related I don't like the revolution, seems awkward. could someone point me out where I can find the levitation device so I can use it on the Water Fountain Lev.? *I was thinking about the Gamolo, but issue is, its a bit slow, and that it doesn't go down all the way. In the end the girl needs to go down on the platform. In the beginning, start by lifting up and start 'floating' already half way. *Like D.C.* This may be hard to find/buy, so if it for sale, please let me know, or possibly who could make just this part?

Call EDF or John Gaughn. They both make this mechanism and it is outstanding. It won't come cheap.

As attractive as this illusion sounds, I don't believe that it would be practical unless you are appearing at a theatre somewhere. Even a well made unit has plumbing issues, as in water leaking. Second, it is huge and heavy. Third, water + electricity = ? Fourth, Have you got a large truck to transport? This is not a "packs small, plays big" illusion.
I have never heard of any DIY illusion builders putting one of these together, however, you could be the 1st. Do share the pictures with us! Chris |

Yeah, right now its on the drawing board. As mentioned in another thread, I do have experience in building, but that doesn't mean I'm some kind of 'pro'. I also have some professional builder who can help me time to time, who lives in my area.
I cannot start building until I find & buy the levitation device. Then I'd need to find how to solve the electricity and water issue as Chris mentioned. Until I find the levitation, I wont be able to do anything. So, depends on how much this will cost, and the other issues.

Would this illusion be considered "public domain", and therefor ok to build your own?
I have always considered it as having proprietary rights (licensed). Who is the illusion credited to? - Donald P.S. Doug Henning was the first performer I remember seeing doing this illusion, on one of his specials.
Donald Dunphy is a Victoria Magician, British Columbia, Canada.

Okay, the illusion is not available in any workshop plans. The 2 aforementiond authorized builders is whom you will have to contact about your purchase of part of an illusion. From being around magic for many years, I really do not think the builders would be inclined to sell only part of an outfit. That is not what they are in business for, they have standard and putting part of an illusion out their, I believe they would be excited about doing.
The only persons that could help you would be someone who has purchased this illusion and will to part with it, but then they would want to sell the entire trick, as the remaining pieces if they did sell to you would leave them in the same situtation you are in. I would not try to put different leveations together, because of what was warned earlier about safey issues. I your avaitar represents your actual age, and you have not come into a very large sum of money, then I think you should consider another illusion. There are many illusion plans available for very good show material, there is a list at the top of this thread that will keep you busy for a while in research. I like the Bret Daniels version, the girl appears, floats around the magician, and then vanishes. Good luck! |

I've contacted the owner of the performance rights to this illusion, and still waiting for the reply.
The person I contacted was... Kirby Vanbirch. I just hope it doesn't go down as bad as it has for the Fire Spiker illusion. After contacting Mark Kalin, he told me all the details relating to this, and was not able to build it.

There is one other person who has the performing rights to the Water Fountain Levitation (at least the version performed by Doug Henning, David Copperfield and Kirby VanBirch) -- Denny Loomis. He co-created this illusion with Doug while attending a magic convention with Doug in Florida in the early 70's. You should check with him. In fact, it was Denny who gave Copperfield permission to perform it on his television special.

In all my years I never heard of Dennis Loomis being involved with Henning's Water Fountain Levitation.
It's funny how you hear about this now after Henning's death. Gerry |

If you don't want to buy proffesionaly made water levitation DON'T DO IT. Water is going everywhere. Your assistant could make wrong move and a drop of water will stop the levitation in the middle of the rutine. Water could get on the stage and stage mechanism... uuhhhh million things can go wrong. Imagine that you buy a good levitation and electronic get wet.
Please tell us if you did it and how will work. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Matt |

Don't forget if you really want to go back the foundation for the whole levitation, the above stage platform was an innovation introduced by Mark Wilson. (Not sure which of his "creators" did the work for him though)
So.....not sure who you go to there, LOL, as it has been "used" by countless others since. B Dennis was involved with the water levi?????????????????????

Yes, Dennis was very definitely a co-creator of Doug Henning's Water Fountain Levitation. I'll see if I can get him to post the details here, but you can also go here for an explanation http://www.doughenningbook.com/Endnotes%20and%20Errata.htm.

To tell you the truth, this is a beast of an illusion to travel with. Years ago I traveled with Terry Evanswood and this was featured in his show. It doesn't troupe easily .. it's heavy and takes up a lot of room on the truck. I don't even want to mention the mess involved with gallons of water. We traveled during the winter and yes, water tends to freeze in the prop.
The thing is a nightmare .. and you do need permission to have this in a show. Terry currently performs this illusion in his own theater in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee if you would like to see if for yourself. Steve |

Thanks to John Harrison for mentioning my name in conjunction with the Water Fountain Levi. Doug also mentions my involvement in an interview in GENII many years ago.
I was inspired by a performance of the Dancing Waters Fountain show at the Tommy Bartlett Water Ski Show at the Wisconsin Dells. As I watched, my head was full of thoughts about how these beautiful fountains could be used in a magic show. Lots of ideas started forming and I sat down afterwards and drew some sketches and made a list of the ideas. Over the next couple of weeks, I kept going back to those notes and adding ideas, refining concepts, etc. Soon afterwards I attended a convention with Doug. (He though it was one of the Abbott Get Togethers, but his memory was wrong, it was the I.B.M. Convention held at the De Lido Hotel in Miami Beach.) While having a meal at Wolfies Restaurant I told Doug about the foutain concepts and we started brainstorming on the topic. We made a bunch of crude drawings on the backs of our place mats. The ideas covered a lot of concepts, but the Levi was probably the best of the lot and the one we spent the most time on. Doug and I, at one point, made an agreement that either of us could make any of these illusions if/when we were inclined. Years later, Doug, working with John Gaughan did build the Water Fountain Levi. I was NOT involved at that point and I'm sure that John and Doug both came up with ideas and it's likely that Glen Priest and Charlie Reynolds were also involved. Later, I did tell David Copperfield that he had my permission to have one made because I knew that he would do a great job with it. He certainly did. My name is in the credits for the special where he performed it for this reason. His Brazillian Rain Forest present was just breathtaking. David also had some long negotiations with Kirby Van Burch about this. To M.Frymus: Please take the good advice already offered in this thread. This is NOT an illusion for anything but a major illusion show either touring in well equipped theatres, or located in a good permanent venue. From your picture you appear to be quite young, but I warn you that this is not something you can cobble together yourself. And, as to the rights issues: this is murky at best. I see no reason why this is in the Public Domain. Kirby Van Burch bought the prop from Doug, but I'm not sure he has exclusive rights, including the rights to allow others to make them. If he has any rights, I certainly do, too. I'm not sure you understand the money that would be involved in adding this to your show. First, you will have to have several assistants to perform this, you will need a BIG truck to transport it, You'll have to travel with your own backdrop which will have to be hung in each venue, you will need a good lighting system in the theatres, or have to travel with one, and you'll need a good size location to store the illusion when you're not trooping with it. Please, do not try to cobble this together yourself. My best advice, if the day comes when it's actually practical for you to work on this scale, is to have John Gaughan build it for you. There are others that could, but he's the go-to guy on this. Remember this is a dangerous illusion... you have about a 50/50 chance of dropping dead with a heart attack when John Gaughan tells you what it's going to cost. Dennis Loomis

Alrighty then..
so, would there be ANY illusion that I would be willing to build! And, if I need the rights, it would be possible to get? Most illusions that most people build, are common illusions. Ones that many people have seen. They might still impress, but I just get really tired of them. I just cant do illusions that I would not enjoy doing. What I mean is, it needs to have a really good routine. I could come up with a good one, but if the illusion itself is bad, as I don't like it.. I just loose it.
