Does anyone have a presentation for this that works for a crowd -- I've been getting very average reactions to what should be a good trick....

Check out Jim Gerrish's presentation here:

Is that basically what you do when you perform it? Are you looking to add more jokes or "bits of business" in the standard routine, or do you want a completely different routine?

Text answer: The Panama Rope Trick is version of the cut and restored rope, in which you cut the rope in three places before restoring it.

Visual answer: See the Video clip mentioned in my earlier post:

http://magicnook.com/MiniMysteries/MM-08PanamaRope.htm

The full routine, as finally evolved by the inventor, Ted Collins, includes a Four to One rope trick, the Panama Rope (as described in Tarbell), and the original "Fly-Away" knot ending (more commonly known by Whit Haydn's nickname for it: "Pop Knot"). The first cut and tie of the Panama Ropes is extremely deceptive, compared to the then (1940s) traditional way of performing cutting a rope and tying it back together. The second and third cuts easily throw off laymen.

This done silently with a little gusto has been a good bit for me but I'm no comedy writer. Smile
To extend the bit vanish the knots one at a time saving the middle for the oops!
You know why don't act naive.
