Hello everyone! I'm new and it's nice to meet you! Please bear with me,
Ive read, studied, scripted and practised a lot of things from 13 Steps & PME, and now I turn to you for advice. What I learned today is that a new person asking for help is told to use the search function, and/or is referred to 13 Steps & PME! Please know that I registered today, after reading through 415 pages of penny for your thoughts posts for tips, and suggestions before posting this question. Although a wealth of information has been put forth I am wondering if there is anyone out there who can help me specifically regarding telepathy routining? I own 2 mentalism books, 13 Steps & PME. I have mild OCD (seriously) and it tends to work for and against me in that it keeps me fairly occupied, but it also tends to take up a lot of my time. Basically, where I want to go with mentalism is very simple. Some mentalists specialise in "body language", "clarvoyant skills", "predicitions" basically I want to major in telepathy. that's my only skill, I know its good to be well rounded but id rather do one thing really good! For example, AcDc is really really good, (IMO), it all sounds the same, but its all good, they are good at one kind of music, I want to be good at one perceived skill or ability..telepathy. I'd like to keep things as simple as possible and wish to specialise in telepathy, aside from what you know in 13 steps & Pme's are there any books you know of that specialise in telepathy routines? I'm trying to not make telepathy boring, ex. why 48? The number I was trying to send you was 48, end of effect. I'd like to develope a multiphase telepathy demonstration in sending and receiving thoughts and any tips you give, I will be happy to receive! Anyways, its very nice to meet you, and I look forward to becomming a valued member of the community and I look forward to one day having 15,000 quality posts! |

Hi Stashu,
Good work on 13 Steps and PME. As far as specializing in telepathy, as opposed to those other performance types, one can argue that it all comes down to presentation. For example, you can write a prediction, and then act like you are sending a thought to someone; have them name a thought and then reveal your prediction. Also, a good question to ask yourself is how you want to present telepathy. For example, do you want to be more comedic or more bizarre? Finding yourself on this spectrum can lead you on paths performers that can help you mold your style of performing. This will help you situate your tastes. I, for example, champion Barrie Richardson's "Theater of the Mind" and "Act Two" as good places to go after Corinda and Annemann (has anybody ever went wrong with these books?), but others may say Osterlind, Banachek, Cassidy, etc., etc. Best of luck, Scott

With a little tinkering, things can often be presented however you like. You mentioned Corinda’s 13 Steps to Mentalism. Much of the Swami Gimmick stuff, book tests, card tricks, and two person tests can be framed as telepathy. Some of the material from the other chapters too.
Elliott Edit - Oops. I see Scott pretty much posted the same thing, while I was busy typing my response. Well, I guess it's unanimous then. It all comes down to how you want to present things. |

Scottybarnhart, pleasure to meet you! how are you doing!? thank you for your reply! I couldn't agree with you more! Who was it that said mentalism is 90% presentation and 10% skill? It's funny because I've pretty much re-framed much of what I had read, studied and practised into a telepathy type presentation! With molding my presentation style, I keep it really simple, I am an idiot so it is ridiculous to think I'm skilled in body language reading or any type of psychology! I'd like to think I'm just a happy go lucky guy, with an unusal ability that I developed in part through my job as a telemarketer, after 10,000 conversations with 10,000 people I started to know in advance BEFORE calling people that they would hang up on me! LOL!
Elliot! How are you doing!? pleasure to meet you! Thanks for your reply! I've read a lot of your posts and have heard so much about you, your the billet man right? I have a lot to learn in that area, ill have to grab your book at some point I've read nothing but rav reviews for your work! And yes this is true, much of 13 steps can be re-framed! I guess I'm just so out of the loop, I mean, I've read and studied two key mentalism texts, designed countless presentations, and am now looking to specialise in telepathy with fresh new and fun stuff. I figured with all the new stuff coming out maybe there is a text which specialises in telepathy demonstrations specifically? Just looking for new ideas, suggestions, advice, or just a friendly "hey stashu I read such and such by so and so available at ronjo" Please let me know if you know of some neat demos, or ideas, I'm sure you all know where I am coming from, just trying to learn as much as I can with your help! |

Maybe that is an avenue worthy of further investigation. Posted: Aug 25, 2009 3:03pm If desired, your telemarketer background can be used for prediction effects. After tens of thousands of calls trying to get people to buy widgets, you’ve gotten really good at influencing people without them realizing it. Lie Detection is also a viable presentational option. How many thousands of times have people told you someone wasn’t home, or that they gave at the office or whatever? Over the years, you’ve gotten good at telling, from choice of words, voice tone and inflection, who is telling the truth and who is lying. Elliott |

ElliottB!!! Wow, that is such a good idea!!! The thought has never crossed my mind!!! that's absolutely genuis! telepathy by phone makes total sence seeing as how that's actually my job! And it fits my presentation, basically, if I really had to "categorize" or brand or style or theme of presentation, I kind of cant, I'd say, I'm pretty much just myself, I don't know how I can compare what I do to what someone else is doing, I don't know any other science nerds who works in telemarketing!!!
But yeah, That fits, I'm a telemarketer if I developed my telepathic abilities in part from practise on the job, I should, in theory, have a whole number of telepathic effects by telephone, right now my only phone effect is knowing the person I'm talking to is about to say no!!! But, again, that is such a good idea! Sorry for going on, but since you know where I'm at, and where I like to go, you probably have a good idea or what to recommend or suggest! I know I mentioned before I have ocd, so, I don't want to overwhelm myself. I made sure I studied and practised 13 steps, and PME before worrying about anything else. So, all I'd like to do now, is slowly but surely customize my entire presentation to fit the theme of what I do, and slowly but surely, maybe once a month, buy a new book for ideas on new and fun things I can try to do. So, I really like that idea, is there like a 13 steps of phone telepathy? If you had to recommend one book, knowing where I'm at and where I'd like to go, what would you suggest? |

Hi stashu and welcome to the Café!
You should check out Dr. Bills "Telephone Bill" ebook if you are interested in over the phone telepathy that uses playing cards. You can find it here http://www.outlaw-effects.com/store/the-......one.html Also book called "Verbal Magic" by Juan Tamariz has over 40 routines you can perform over the phone. I hope this helps! -Aleksi |

Hi Aleksi! Thanks for the welcome and the very good ideas! Verbal magic sounds good and is 3 dollars off right now! It sounds like the perfect book to get me started! It won the coin toss over Dr. Bills "Telephone Bill" which also looks really good! Thanks for the advice!

You might also want to look into some cold reading. A little skill at cold reading can greatly enhance the illusion of telepathy, especially if subtly worked into the routine of an already good trick.

You may wish to consider hiring a director (or "consultant") who is willing to take the time to help you develop your act.

Philemon is right. I've been in touch with two directors trying to persuade them to help me hone my act. Never forget you're an actor. And an actor without a director is like an athlete without a coach.

Hi corsufle! Thank you for your reply! that's is an excellent plan! I am semi-embarrassed to say my aunty has a table in a market where she does tarot readings, I havent talked to her much about it! Maybe ill record her sessions, I see a psychic every month and he's really good, he's probably cold reading me, but he sure does it professionally, its spookily accurate!!! Cold reading is something I will definetly have to learn. I've had to take every sales seminar under the sun at one time or another, so far I can nail an introvert from an extrovert and if Im lucky enough to be looking at the person I'm talking to, put 2 and 2 together from thier apparal and manner of speech! But this is definetly something I need to work on for the purposes of demonstrating telepathy.
philemon vanderbeck, thank you for your reply! Again, another avenue I have not thought of travelling!!! I definetly could use the help, if your only as strong as your weakest link, well, I'm a pretty weak link, lol, ill have to somehow work something out and start saving an X number of dollars monthly, I'm sure the advise I receive will be worth the expense!!! Rocketeer! Good to meet you, thanks for your reply! I couldn't agree more with everything youve said!!! Good luck with honing your act!!! |

Don't over look Step 2 in "Thirteen Steps To Mentalisim". Part one (PR) and part 3 (SR)can be very powerful.

If you have confidence, it will shine through your performances. Truthfully tell yourself that you are capable of what you are doing. If you believe it, your audience will more likely believe it; lie to yourself, and then to your audience. As Chuck Hickok says, react genuinely to your performances, as though, in your case, if you really had telepathic abilities. How would you react if you could actually read minds? I doubt you would react with "I am an idiot and cannot do this." As well, if you have never met your spectators before, how do they know that you are not skilled in psychology or body language? As well, it is simple to tell a friend that you have been reading a book recently on psychology or body language. Simple as that. And though your line is about telemarketing is funny, I would be a bit hesitant to use that gimmick because, to be frank, most people despise the telemarketing field. Seems like you're off to a great start, so the best of luck, Scott
