Adding the cables down the middle is a great touch. The one that Steinmeyer designed for Doug always confused me a bit, because with a real elevator, when the door is open, you do not see the shaft because the doors only open when the car is on the same floor. So, the change was a bit puzzling. Your cable concept clarifies it. I would think that the presentation could also convey the information that the first view is the view of the open shaft.

Copperfield's version was a thing of beauty and, I think, more deceptive. Especially when it was shot for the TV special with the camera giving you a 360 degree view. Of course, by then there had been a lot of time elapsed to think about improving the origial as done by Doug. It remains a great concept and a great way to integrate shadows into an illusion.
