It doesn't look so real...
I have one real, I should picture it... I'll do that in the next days... ;) |

The curator at the Egyptian Museum said that a lot of mummy parts were imported into England in the 19th century. So it is plausible that it might be a real hand. But I don't know anything more than what is on the site.

I have been told that lots of mummy sold today are in fact, XXth Century tourist lost in desert...

I've seen and handle real mummified hands. This one looks pretty convincing at first sight, even if the usual price for such an artifact (a real one) is far more expensive.
Mummified hands are very light weighted as the water is long time gone, and extremely fragile. |

It's real.
In the OLD days, they used to plow up mummies by the hundreds and use them for fertilizer...mummy parts were readily availlable and cheap. Mummies were not only in tombs, they were in the ground as well all over the place. I had one (a hand JUST like in the photo) in the early 70's I got from Peter Hennen...it, like the Curator said, was air light and just eventually fell to dust. I had some friends who werre Egyptian and owned the Anchorage Fur Factory on 4th Ave....they made Parkas and Muklucs and stuff and beautiful Shealing coats. Anyway...after the Mummy hand went to dust, I put it in a paper bag and gave it to him to send 'home'. It seemed right at the time. haha.

(sold for) 460£ seems a more logical price.
The Egyptians nowadays have nothing in common with the people living in Egypt 4000 years ago... |

Ah but back in the early 1970's they were exactly the same.

The late Gene Poinc had a mummy’s hand, and a lovely one it was, in a case away from tempting touch. He may have left it to Larry White, who passed away this year, or it could have ended up with distant relatives. Ah, how Gene loved that hand!
Now I would think such a hand “Higley” style, that could perhaps spin or point, could be of wide if bizarre interest? If he makes the hand I’ll concoct the story…. Magically, Walt |

You could make one where, when pulling the index finger, a mysterious noise followed by an even more suspicious smell appears...

I am a painter by profession, and it always astounded me that Mummy Brown, a popular and widely available artists colour in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, was made from ground egyptian mummies suspended in a binder. They were so available and disposable. Even Joseph Smith bought a couple mummies and funeral papyri he used when forming the nascent mormon church.

I had a real mummies hand that I bought for $100.00 some twenty years ago... alas, I sold it ( along with the rest of my little egyptian collection ) to pour into the endless drain of non-affordable health-costs.
I wish I still had those things.... I wish my health-insurer didn't deny me care. Life still goes on.... |

What is done many times, is that unscrupulous dealers send killers (yes, of the murdering pursuasion) to remote mountain villages in, let's say, Tibet, where old lonely people are whacked on the head until they die. Then, these corpses are gutted, put in masses of salt and mummified. When x-rayed, you do see a corpse. It's just not that old. It's often the same people who deal in organs: poor children are operated on to remove their retina for $20 each. And don't be shocked when I tell you that this is of all ages...
