Some one told me they saw a version of the shrinking card box, and the large box vanished, and in it's place was a small, tiny card box which was examinable. Has anyone seen this or know of it? It sounds like something I would like.

It's a trick marketed by Henry Evans, I believe. It's called "Tribute To Varone." It's a great effect, as after the box shrinks, it is a lot smaller than the usual John Kennedy version of the same effect, and yes, also examinable.

Brother John Hamman and Gary Kurtz also have versions. Hamman's is published in his book Secrets, and Gary Kurtz´s is in his Ron McMillan lecture video.

Henry Evans' "Tribute To Varone" is a very direct, visual, KILLER effect for laymen. Not only does the box shrink, but a selected card vanishes from the deck and appears folded inside of the tiny box (using no sleight of hand).
This is an effect I added to my professional repertoire, and I rarely add anything new. Regards, Larry D. P.S. - Brent Braun's "Torched and Restored" is another great "worker." |

Just for the record, "Varone" was a Brazilian magician who gained "fame" exposing the workings of dealers' items some 20 years ago.

The Shrinking Card Case has many variations. I believe John Kennedy has one too.

I just recently started performing Henry Evans' "Tribute to Varone." It's a great effect. I got the routine out of his lecture notes, which were just a little sketchy as to the initial handling when you remove the cards and the card case shrinks.
I would still like to see him perform this effect on his video. Does anyone know if there is a demo video of this effect anywhere online? Also, I believe the Kennedy shrinking card case is the same size as the Henry Evans' card case, although I guess you could use a smaller cardcase. I'm just familiar with the Bicycle size small cardcase. The only other difference would be the fact that you can't examine the Kennedy case and you can examine the Evans' case. Either way, they're both very visual effects.

The Kennedy shrinking card case is not the same size as the Henry Evans' card case. The Evans' card case is about 1/4 the size.

chri5hill,
Thanks for the info on the video. I just watched it and I see that the card case is much smaller than I thought it would be. It's just big enough to hold the folded card. I've been using a standard miniature bicycle card case and it also works well, however, I can see where a smaller case would have a greater visual look to it when it shrinks.

I just watched the video and think that it gives the trick away, When he sets the extra card off to the side. I wasn't able to hear what he was saying so there may be something I was missing. But most cards that lay on the table should lay flat.

LOL, you're right japanjazzy, it does. But you can just put those cards away in performance instead of leaving them on the table. I think "Tribute to Varone" is an awesome effect.

Yeah, the demo gave me a bit of a giggle too, but it was partly as a result of that "mistake" that I bought the trick. I met the guy from the video in Alakazam, and I happened to mention having seen the demo. He showed me the trick up close and I was blown away, even having a rough idea what was going on.
Now, I use "Tribute to Varone" as the opener to my card routine. It needs a little bit of plot to justify the shrink, but it's a beautiful trick. Cheers, Cy. |

Don't forget the Cornelius Shrinking Card Case. It is also very good.

Joseph,
Now that you mentioned the Cornelius shrinking cardcase, I realized that, in my previous post, I meant to say Cornelius NOT Kennedy shrinking cardcase. I've use the Cornelius cardcase for many years. I'm not familiar with the Kennedy case.

Chris,
Thanks for the tip on the video. I got a kick out of the hovering joker on the table. I would still buy the trick, even if it did sort of give things away |

This effect is great. But I've seen the method in print years ago. It was printed in either H********t or K*****a in the 70's. I bought the books that it was in. I've made one and used it.
