Life is strange and often tragic on many levels. Yesterday I started getting emails about my best friend telling me that they are praying for him. I didn't know what was going on and having spoke with him the other day nothing was up and hoped that all was well. Today I find out my godson, a quiet and polite young man (ain't it always the quiet ones?) was charged with eight felonies ranging from attempted multiple murder, exploding devices, and terrorism because he decided to attack his highschool. Neither myself nor my friend defend those that don't warrant it and since it is pretty clear he did it then the courts will decide his fate which likely would mean life in prison, for a 17 year old kid that is a loooong time (or about five years in California give or take). I don't know why, neither does my friend, and there is no excuse. My point for posting is that if you suspect something is up with your kid or nephew etc don't just pass it off, check it out, see what they have hidden in the closet which, by the way, is YOUR closet not theirs. Maybe you can stop a kid before he destroys his life and those of his family.

That just sucks. Truly and deeply.
But there *is* a bright side, I suppose. He didn't succeed in killing anybody, right? |

God that is tough news Santa. All the best to the family as everyone works through this.

I assume Santa is talking about the San Mateo’s Hillside High incident, as there surely could not be two such identical incidents in the space of a day or two.
Thank goodness this 17 year old was only armed with what he had, and nothing more deadly. Some people are comparing this to Columbine, but I think that is a superficial comparison. I could be wrong, but from what I've seen reported in the news it sounds like the Columbine kids were loaded for bear compared to how it was in this incident. I know if got "lucky" he could have hurt and killed many people, but I think that was probably not likely given what he was carrying. I almost wonder if he wasn't trying to get caught. Kudos to the teachers who stopped him. Of course, I was not there and I only know what I've heard reported, so I may be way off base and I readily admit that. Anyway I hope he pays the appropriate price for what he did, but I also hope he gets the help he needs.

Yes, that is the case at Hillside High in San Mateo. It is kind of interesting to me because neither parent (they divorced awhile ago) carry a dislike for any peoples in fact I can tell you the father is of the opinion that if the boy did it he needs to do the time regardless of how tragic it is for him to have a son in that situation. The boy lived with his mom who is a wonderful woman and kind of on the hippy side, very sweet and nice. She likely wouldn't know a bomb making item from any of the science projects that the kids were working on, their dad being very into science. I love the kid but as I said, I don't blindly defend those that do things like that as you often see on TV news with the parents saying "no way he did that". I won't be pushing the subject with my friend or his wife but if it can happen to a couple who is intelligent, caring about their children, strict with them in their behavior (more so with my friend than the mom), no drinking or drugs, no extreme views, then it can happen to any of us.
Yes it would have been far and away worse had a child or teacher been hurt or killed by Alex (named after the guy from RUSH). |

So after you find hidden in the closet multiple murder plots, exploding devices, terrorists and a burning laser pointer, what do you say to your kids?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

You get them into a mental evaluation at minimum. Same if your kids are tormenting animals. If need be you toss 'em into the loving arms of the police (in this case the mother works for the courts). There was a kid in Cupertino about five years ago or so who was going to do an attack on DeAnza College, where I spent a lot of time. The kid got caught because he tried getting pictures of him with bombs etc developed and the girl at the developer was a cops daughter and she, luckily, ratted him out. That kid had a bunch of explosives. End of story is if you catch something like this going on you get them into a position not to do the attack and if that means turning your kid in you do it.bvc

I hope things are well with the family. Interesting to hear the other side of this. It has been big news down here.

I'll let you know what is up with the dad. He has not been mentioned yet in any article I've seen yet, luckily. I am sure when people see articles about this type of thing they assume the parents are neglecting the kids or nuts, I did too, but I've known this family for about 25 years and they are good solid people. I will say the kid is, and always was, extremely quiet (as is the dad until you get to know him and then he is a great guy), even as a baby, but so was his sister who I'm sure is crushed by this whole thing as they are very close. My wife is pretty upset as Alex use to cuddle up with her when he was a toddler and she is very fond of him.

San Mateo is a good area with a nice mixed community and a small town feel in the shadow of cities.

I've been in contact with the family and I'll keep my long rant down to the following:
While I believe that Alex should be charged for HIS crimes I am extremely dissappointed that he is being lynched by the bay area media and clearly being charged with the murders of all those at Colubine and Virginia Tech. That isn't what I thought American court systems are about and the kid is sol because he has a public defender who is as useless as a beret at a street magic festival. I'll restrain myself now but it is sickening what is going on behind the scenes. |

Tough news, sorry to hear about it. Right or wrong, any similar cases nowadays will probably be judged harsher because of those incidents in recent past. Makes you wish that these kids could think about and comprehend the consequences of their alleged actions before acting.

Lets just say he fell for the 'they won't do nothing if you are not 18 yet' crap and was trying to scare the kids. I can't say more but I'm not happy and I realize I'm too close to the situation.
