I don't think that the "backstage tours" at Disney and Universal take anything away from the "magic" that is the rest of the entertainment experience. Only the people who want to see this type of stuff visit those attractions and/or shell out the extra money for the tour. Also, if you are really in tune, you can tell that there is a lot of show and a little bit of "forced perspective presentation" contained within these tours.
I think that a similar experience aimed at a State/Grange Fair audience would be very interesting and a good selling point as a "plus experience" as a part of whatever entertainment package is being sold when the right showman puts things together. Chris |

They have prop Guys (Altar Boys,{I was one}) 4.They have a "Fortune Teller Booth" (Confessional) 5.They have "Traps" (see Vigil-Lights, Holy water) 6. They have a "Novelty Stand" (located at entrance where Children Books, Rosary's ect are sold..(note: all traps and novelty's are sold on Honor system) 7.They have a "Pitch" with agents (ushers) passing the plate... 8.and the Lead performs a Magic-trick (Changing Bread and wine into.....) and ...they Have the best Advertising, Think about it? Drive by other Establishments and their signs have a message of Doom and Gloom...Drive By a Catholic Church and Their Main Sign reads "Bingo wendsday Night,7:00" ...Hey, I'm in!!!!!........ You come to a point in your life when you really don't care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.

I'm not a sideshow person as such -- mainly been involved in magic, mentalism and the like, though I have worked in the carnies in the past (my uncle owned the one the did the west coast for years, a life time ago!).
Anyhow, that said, I love the sideshows -- they are wonderful! To meet the folks behind the scenes would only enhance my love! I think that the general public would also enjoy meeting them. I also think that would also help to enchant the public for once they know of the people, theyould take their friends to the sideshows and do the name dropping thing! No matter where this goes, I believe that the idea The Curator proposes, in my humble opinion, is great! David |

It would be a great blow off. And as long as it was done the right way. The Curator is not going to give away the secrets of his livelihood. So I think it is in good hands. Just my two cents.

You say you tell your customers, "Of the 45 attractions only 4 are fake" from the way I understand this new exhibit you will be telling them which ones are which, where is the fun in that? The only knowledge I have of this exhibit is what has been posted and my thoughts stay the same. Don't get me wrong, I think Doug is a great artist and I consider him a friend but, I don't want him next to one of my spots saying "Hello, my name is Doug Higley, look what I can make and I have made them for the last 38 or so years for shows all over the country." Then they come to my tent and go "OOOh that's awesome, Doug Higley made that" and while that is cool for the artist, I don't have an art gallery, I have a sideshow and I just as soon they not know who Doug Higley is, that is one of my secrets.

Good point but not to worry. I have existed in the pleasure of darkrness for all these years. The Phantom Of The Midway has a meaning. People don't necessarily know it's "art" much less there was an artist...nor need they. Unknown, unheralded, plying the trade and craft in stealth mode has been my greatest pleasure...I get a kick out of it, I don't have that ego to feed...though I do enjoy the attention of my peers here on the Café more than any will know. I don't need much recognition...just a little which the Café provides.
I put out a really terrific book recently...Museum: Mysteria. It is a photographic record of my work...beautifully printed and with outrageous photos. Yet not ONCE did I take credit for any of the 60 pieces photographed. ANON. Love being behind the curtain. Have no fears...I have many stories to tell about fakes and historical hoaxes...I also take the responsibilty very seriously to my customers to not reveal certain things. I don't sell on eBay for that reason above all. Like I've said before...I could retire next week if I did. I've been asked to appear on Coast To Coast, I turned it down even though that would mean many millions of new people interested in what I do. The book Museum: Mysteria is for the insiders not the Gen Pub. There are 3 left by the way. (even with 3-D glasses!) I'm with ya dough.

What about showing a worker making a series of freak 'replicas' (like when you buy an miniture Effifel Tower or Statue of Liberty on holiday). Explain that these were souvenirs for people to buy, then bring on the REAL zibits
