Hello everyone, I am dealing with information overload! My brain is going to explode.
I came here looking for answers to questions I had, since joining this Café I realised how little I know about mentalism. I had a question about impression devices, after using the search button my 1 question turned into 1000 questions, am I using pencil, pen or marker? Am I up close or on stage? real time? Size of pad? Do I have 100 dollars or 1000 dollars? I thought I was up to date with NW's, again, Im not, and now I have 1000 more questions, and many, many doubts about how effective the way ive been doing things is! I am overwhelemed with information, I don't know where to start, I am now starting to think there is absolutely no way I can compete with anyone else, with regards to offering an amazing mysterious experience to a spectator because I lack all the high tech new and improved secret technologies and knowledge. Does any one just make lists? Set goals? Make a promise to order a new book every month, every 2 weeks? Schedule practise routines for pre-stage advice? How do you deal with information overload? Whats the best way to go about learning everything there is to learn? Any advice you give will be appreciated! |

Nope, you don't have to follow the crowd, nor know every technique under the sun...
forget about this place and forums in general, go re-read 13 steps and annemann..go low tech, experiment, practice and test things out...thats the fun of it! no one knows everything, no matter what they tell you - they know what works for them, and due to experience, know that it willl also work for the vast majority too... so you may not like some of the annemann effects as an example, however knowing that the effect works means that you can alter the presentation to suit you more... go buy the basics, practice, find out what suits you, what you are comfortable with, and what you would like to progress with... practice - and write out a little speech/script of who you are, and what you can do...make all your effects touch upon and display your skills... don't worry about hi-tech, or latest methods...start at the beginning and see what happens...

stashu wrote: My personal opinion is that giving 'an amazing mysterious experience' has nothing to do with what lastest technology you are using. A strong effect will come across as weak in the hands of a poor performer, and, conversely an average trick will be simply amazing in the hands of an engaging performer. The amazing experience will come from YOU, not your props. So don't worry about trying to discover every secret there is, just concentrate on giving a great piece of entertainment and your audience will love you. |

Very Well put Ian. Keep it simple Stashu and mess around with different presentations to the same effects you are doing and have fun with it! Set goals? absulotely set goals. Once you acheive those goals set more and you will soon find that you can do pretty much anything you set your mind to. I try and practice every day but it's not always possiable with my job and other things that are going on in my life. I usually practice the same things all the time, I don't know 100 different effects and there are many effects out there that I wish I could buy or wish I new but I do know enough that I love to perform and that fits my style.
It's not about quantity it's about quality. Master what you know and go from there and don't let information overload frusterate you to the point that you feel like your getting know where. Daren

Imagine that volume of material hitting a brain with ADD......
If you are in that situation it will be difficult trying to master one trick to even one "skill" set upon which to base your mentalism. BUT THAT IS NOT A WEAKNESS. You just need to stay challenged. My solution has been to do Q&A as a specialty and short readings at parties -- no longer than 5 minutes. Both are walking the plank with applied principles -- not set routines. Along with that I have been working toward developing two blue or risque' acts for bachelor and/or bacheloretle parties. These are using things like Knickerbocker (psychometry of underwear?) and Key-Erect (Banachek) all require the use of ad-libs to accent the principles...... If ADD is not one of your problems and you are just overwhelmed with material to choose-- then I cannot help you from experience -- but can definitely recommend you do not buy Magick either collected or reprint. Like Mind Myth and Magic, it will drive you to distraction with ideas and routines.

Its so nice to feedback from people who know what they are talking about!
IAIN; thanks! Sounds good! Ill hit the books and find things I may have missed, and just kind of refresh, script/practise, really work on my character, I was terrfied my routine is really lame by the looks of all the crazy new stuff out there and all the crazy good mentalists that are putting it out! I will slowly add skills as I go. Thanks for always being polite and taking a second to reply! Mind; thank you very much for your opinion! Daren James; Thanks for writing back! Im in the same situation with work, and trying to learn/ practise/ script/ ensure I do the effects justice, I would be angry if a mentalist did a swami effect for me so poorly that I figured out the mystery! Im going to keep it simple and learn 1 new thing a month! Mark Raven; thank you very much for your response, did as you recommended! Chmara; thank you very much for your response, I don't have ADD, unfortunetly I do have mild OCD. I will definetly follow your advise. Before my brain explodes I think Ill stick with what I've learned and what I know and gradually grow instead of overwhelming myself. I think Bert Reese knew 1 billet switch, 1 pellet switch, and according to Al Mann a center tear so Ill try and just finetune my scripting and add 1 billet switch a month, 1 peek a month, but Ill set a budget in advance so I don't bankrupt myself. I think I just need to really make a solid plan, and stick to it!!! Thanks a lot for all your tips, it really helps alot, its nice to talk to people who know what they are talking about! |

Remember what corinda said in 13 steps. You don't need to learn 100 different ways to achieve an effect (such as a ct billet switch ect.) learn one great way and master it and do it over and over and over till it hurts. Then maybe learn a second or so after that. (not an exact quote but you bet the idea)
Good luck on your journey into the wonderfull art of mentalisim. Daren

Figure out what it would be like if someone did something amazing to YOU
Figure out how to do that yourself so you can perform that for other people You need a goal |

When I started, I made a list of things I realistically wanted to achieve within a year, of course looking back at it now, its hysterically funny, but I have contiued that tradition of just five things to achieve.
As for the overload, yup, someone once gave me wise words that made me think differently. That everyone needs an outlet, a hobby if you will. But when that hobby becomes an obsession you need to find something else as well so it doesn't consume you... Well that was the jist of it anyway... not wise words from me, but just sympathizing a little... Evie x |

At first the world of mentalism can be more than a little overwhelming.
Work on creating rooms in your mind, then storing different sets of information within each room. Use 'thought doors' to keep the information locked in place. Once you have done this and been interested in mentalism for a few months, you will be ready to release your first Ebook. Price it high in order to keep out the merely curious. |

Hey Looch! I havent really ever thought about getting a mentor to help assist me in sorting through everything and assisting me with my progress. I have no idea where to look! There really isn't anyone I can talk to in person, and I don't know anyone in my area interested in any of this! So I turned to the internet and I don't want people to think I'm an idiot, so I bought 13 Steps and PME and read them thouroughly, scripted, practised and created semi-original routines I did actually perform infont of actual real human beings, and on local college radio before I signed up here so that I would at least know the basics and then pretty much take it from there! Everyone here is really nice and I am so happy for people who give me tips and suggestions! And your "influence" video was excellent I really dig what you did, and thought it was done very well!
FairieSnuff! Evie, have I ever told you you are probably one of the coolest people Ive ever talked to! I cant possibly agree more with what your saying! I am taking up knitting, or cliff jumping effective immediately! Kevin Cook! Thank you for sharing, you have some really good ideas! Lejon! I agree with you 100%, only I would add 1 more smiley face! |

Here is something that helped me a lot. I only learn one thing at a time. After I learn it I practice it. After I practice it---I practice it again. And after I practiced it for the final time---I practice it once more. I am then so ready to move on to my next bit of information. But always remember the best way to retain something is to practice what you learn by applying the principle to an actual effect.
Good magic to all, Eric |
