It's impossible to do a 90 minute show just saying"..look, look, look.." Even if you are David Blaine.
He'll have to say "Check it out" at least a few times! LOL

I bet you guys are way better aren't you. Suuuuuure. What I like about Blaine is his realism. I also appreciate the fact that he doesn't make me cringe from the archetype of the corney magician in the horrible attire trying to squeeze cheap laughs with a condescending attitude from an audience that secretly feels a deep and creepy twinge they only later realize is a "big ole bowl of sorry for him."

Very brave, considering how his last live stunt went...

Db is capable of far more than we know. He started the genre of street magic, and many people do magic because of him.
If db is doing a live show, it will be spectacular. Ever stunt db attempts is real. When you do it for real things can go wrong. Every magician that performs close up magic within past 10 years needs to give a thank you to db, his work supports what you do... support him, not because he needs it, but because you should. I think that's my first "rant " lol no coffee yet... Andrew Gerard

Boy, this is a tough one. David has done his share of selective editing to enhance the effect, but has been eclipsed by CA's flagrant abuse of the medium so he ended up looking virtually innocent by comparison.
DB's main challenge for a legit live show is his typical use of reduced expectations by design. If you do an effect for a homeless man on the street, he might be more amazed at anything you do than someone who has paid $80 to see you in a Vegas showroom. He focuses on people with reduced expectations so the relative pay off seems more impressive. When your expectations are increased (for example in a legit performance space with a higher ticket price) you might not be as impressed with "biting a quarter". I don't doubt that he has the ability to pull it off as he's proven himself to be a clever and savvy marketer. He just needs the chops to pull it out without being able to cut to a reaction to cover "less than perfect" technique. That's really just a matter of practice so I don't think that will be a weak link if he puts his mind to it. He's proven himself to be pretty disciplined with what he really wants to accomplish. If he has a good team that specializes in this type of show, it has good potential. It will be interesting to see it develop.

No here yet has factored in charisma. I've met DB in person and he is very charismatic. With enough charisma, you can win wars, build empires and get elected as president. Doing a little magic show shouldn't be too hard.

Andrew hit the nail on the head. It's funny that people can so easily criticize yet look at the impact Blaine has had. If you mention magic there are 3 people that instantly come to the mind of laymen... Blaine, Copperfield, and Angel. Are YOU on this list? I am fortunate enough to call all of these guys friends. I have also been fortunate enough to see Blaine work live... he KILLS... people truly think they have seen the real thing. He and the other individuals have had more impact on magic than any other magician period. Blaine's character is very carefully thought out- he does not get in the way of his magic, he does not tread on it with stupid jokes and long stories, he UNDERSTANDS what plays and doesn't more than any magician I have ever met, and he is believable - people believe he can do real magic. Do you get that? So we can criticize the big guys all we want but the fact is these guys have had a huge impact. We should be thanking them instead of making a mockery of any of them.

You are right...they are beyond criticism.
Of course, the other side of the coin is that you know you have reached critical mass when you are subjected to mockery, to wit: Martin Short's notable mockery of Doug Henning and Harry Shearer's parody of Copperfield. but of course, you are right...they are beyond criticism

Come on--I think Blaine has more than proven he knows how to make his magic work with an audience--whether it be someone on the street, a celebrity guest at his house, millions of people on television, or on stage for a grand scale stunt--the guy knows how to work.
If he's smart enough to know what to do, and what not to do, to amaze people on the streets, I'm sure he's smart enough to apply the same thinking to how to make his magic play in a theatre. I'm SURE if he is thinking of doing a live show he has a vision for what he wants the live show will be, and that it's more than 90 minutes of saying "watch, look," etc.. In short, I think Blaine deserves a bit more credit for his ability to connect to people and understand what does and doesn't work with his audiences. If he's planning a live show, there's no reason to believe it should be any less successful or amazing as his other work. |

I'm not even talking about cheating for camera and editing out methods. I have no doubt that unlike other TV magicians he can create methodology that can be performed live. I think he's a smart thinker on that. I've just never seen him do more than two effects in a row for anyone. I think magicians in general tend to not understand the skills necessary to sustain a larger show. Just because you can do 10 effects in a row, doesn't mean you can command a stage for that same amount of time and captivate an audience for 90 straight minutes (of course Cashetta never did 90 straight minutes). The other element that some in our community don't seen to get, is that as the size of the audience/venue increases, so do the demands on the performance. There is a big difference from doing an effect for a group of 6 people on the street (even if half of them are on your staff) and sustaining 90 minutes in front of 600 and up. I know the example of entertaining millions on TV is there but on television you are, by the nature of the medium, entertaining individuals sitting in their home so it's a more intimate condition then working in a more traditional theater environment. I know he's charismatic, I know he understands his image and what he does. There is just an impression that someone can just "step into" a large venue and succeed if they are smart. It just doesn't usually happen that way. The skill set is very different and requires both knowledge AND the right abilities. I will say that I think he will have a MUCH greater chance of success than the other magician that tried this recently and is largely considered a joke by the Vegas community.

Very good points, given the amount of info provided.
db does not only perform on tv, or on the streets for a few people. He does apearences for hundreds of people and has them hanging on every word he says. db is an intelligent, well spoken individual, like I said.... David Blaine is capable of far more than we know.He adjusts his energy to the space around him and is VERY aware of EVERYTHING he does and says, no words are wasted. David is a deliberate thinker, nothing is as it seems, yet he is exactly the person he was meant to be. Andrew Gerard
