Hey guys,

I wasn't quite sure where to put this topic, but because it is mostly a children's illusion I decided to put it here. I was wondering if anyone had any links to a video of someone performing this effect (Princess Flying Carpet) at a real show, in front of an audience. As strange as it sounds I couldn't find any one youtube... weird. Anyways anything would help, thanks a bunch!

Flying crapet is a great illusion and a lot of fun as well. many discussions you will find here on it as well as the chair suspension illusion. These two illusions tend top be used most by magicians working birthday style events. I will see if I can find any footage for you.

Thanks for the help Kyle!

I managed to find a bunch of topics about the flying carpet, none with any videos. I did see one video of it last night, unfortunetly it was just a demo. I am looking for something infront of an audience, if possible.

Thank you,
Zach

Yiu are most welcome Zach. I doubt much that youwill find any performance video. Are you wanting it to get an idea of how it is performed? Are you looking for ideas for routining? Perhaps we all can assist you.

At least it is something. I hope Zach chimes in and gives us a bit more background into what he is after and seeking. If he is working on a routine or presentation or if he is looking into possibly buying one. This way we can direct him better and offer more help.

I think I saw the Flying Carpet in in a Tony Hassini Illusion VHS tape. (I think they are now on DVD)

That video is the best reason to never videotape the so-called "Flying Carpet." First, it doesn't fly. Second, it gives itself away when the weight is applied and even worse when the weight is removed. Perform it if you must, but video it at your peril.

I also feel it is best for stage. That is the only way I use mine.

Even under ideal conditions and with my best presentation, the "Ooh-Ahh" response is immediately overtaken by "Oh! I get it!" I use mine almost exclusively as a promotional photo op prop these days.

I have used both for many years but I switched to using the chair suspension for birthday parties and the like, a long time ago. for me personally, it just looks better, is easier to transport and has much better angles and site lines. however, this has been discussed before in detail in other threads. it is just a personal preference. =)

The Flying Carpet in the Daytona Magic demo is quite awful! Though you only get a few seconds, you can see my Flying Carpet in action at the end of the opening song in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw933NoTy0o
(If you listen closely, you can hear the lad in the foreground as he turns to his mom and says: "It's Magic! I didn't know magic was real...")
I do have the whole presentation on DVD, but have never uploaded the whole thing to YouTube, so for now, that's all you get!

I've stopped doing the swivel portion of the illusion. It is too difficult to mask the usage of the gaff. I start my stage show with my assistant on the carpet so that there is only one time the weight removal is telegraphed to the audience.

Hey guys,

Sorry I was out back to school shopping today, school starts Tuesday for me. Anyways I was more looking to get performance ideas and what kind of music goes well with it. Either fast beat, or more slow paced music etc. I am going to find my own music but I wanted to see what others do in terms of the speed of their music, aswell as the story line and performance aspects.

I am only using mine at a couple up coming fairs/family days, aswell as anywhere where I can be on a stage.

I was also wondering if it is best to perform this illusion on a stage or on the ground level, because it seems to me the gimmick is easier to see when the flying carpet is up on a stage. But from what I have read above everyone prefers using it on the stage, why is this? Also do you spin the carpet while the volunteer is on it, or just leave it be.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!

Spellbinder is quite correct. This is why "Float me Alone" is so much better, as when you sit on three suitcases balanced on each other, they naturally wobble, and make the illusion look like a little miracle(in the right hands). The flying carpet/Princess sold by dealers is quite awful IMHO.

I can only find a old dead link to the "Float me Alone". Where can I find this? sounds very interesting!

I bought my Flying Princess used on Ebay, maker unknown (I think it is Maks).I too do not use the swiveling part as to me it yells out gimmick,..as far as Presentation and Music,I center the story line around the Alladin and Jasmine movies, dressing up the boy or girl in a pull-on costume and a Crown or Tiara and use Mistic Horizons from Magi Tracks as my music.I've only presented this Illusion at B-day Parties in Homes and Parlor settings (no raised Stage)and have had no problems with angles. But,all in all,I get a better reaction with my Chair suspension.Mike

For me, the Carpet moving about and spinning is what creates the impression that there is nothing holding it up. I've modified the underside of the carpet, so that there is NOTHING to see if anyone looks at the underside.
I have also routined the illusion so that the shield is removed several minutes before I start the effect. This takes all the heat off the shield, and I've had so many folks asking how it's done.....even an engineer who said: "I think I worked out how it works....but it can't be, unless it weighs a ton! I can't understand how it can work without a counterbalance", (or words to that effect, Hee hee!)
Zach, if you watch the video link in my previous post, you will get a very good idea of how I perform this illusion.

I like Potty's presentation of the effect and how he positions himself as the child is floating. Seeing the child react like that, "its magic" is priceless for the family. The whole idea of applying time misdirection sounds about right.

My question is, how do you tie it in with the Pirate Theme, what words or music are being played? Like, what's it's purpose?

Also in adding the flying carpet or chair suspension, do you charge extra or is it part of the show?

Just curious.

Potty,

I did watched the video, and absolutely loved your flying carpet! It looks to me like not only where you spinning it around, but also moving it forwards and backwards, did you make a modification to your carpet? Mine only spins around.
