Who would be stupid enough to ape Max Maven? Oh wait a second, there is that guy--where is he?---in asia. south america? You know what I like about watching favorite performers is the chance to model what is underneath the character. The deep structure that informs the surface structure. What I mean is if you really,I mean really study them closely; you can find, notice and understand the deep structure that is made of many universaly applicable traits and qualities that help create the surface of character that is utterly unique to them. For example; with what I call intense empathic scanning, you can kind of step into, even for a shear nano-moment, the state of consciousness Max is in that expresses itself as a charismatic flourish or tone of voice or way of framing the trick, or directing a spectator. Through that empathy you can recreate in your own performance the INNER that would allow you to create a masterful outer that is uniquely yours. I hope that makes some sense.
I mentioned the word model, but I am not talking about anything in NLP, at least not knowingly. I think I just put in words what many already know intuitively. The problem is that many young or immature performers have not yet made this subtle discovery and therefore unconcsiously just copy the performer.

Certain nuances are noticed/seen on the DVD especially if you have read the book a number of times...yes a number of times.

And it doesn't help that the more inexperienced seem to have very strange yard sticks of skill. |

I wonder how many effects from PRISM Max uses regularly today. I have a bet and it's very round.

Very bad idea.
So is the 13 steps DVD IMO. M |

It would be nice to see how they perform it in the DVD, but same as Matthew, I do not like the idea of making it into a DVD. Mentalism materials are better in books because of the youtube generation. If a mentalist is really dedicated, they will put time to read manuscripts rather than simply watching it in a video... Just my opinion.

I just finished my first run through of "Nothing" and while it would have been valuable as a book the advantage gained from "seeing" Max's personal execution of the show plus the vast commentary and advice are "Nothing" short of "priceless".
I say there is nothing wrong with having BOTH books and DVDs to paint the entire picture. And we should all respect that we all learn in different ways. :readingbook: :online:

I quite agree, Victor. Plus, when someone dismisses something as a bad idea not only without seeing it but even before it's even released, there's a real potential here for looking a bit foolish. And that's IMO... |

I agree that it's a great thing to want to see your favorite printed material performed live. Instead of hoping for a DVD of it, though, what about actually just performing it?

The only reason I would buy a DVD with a collection of effects from the color books would be if Max Maven himself was performing them.
No, wait... I would buy the DVD even if the effects were performed by Phil Goldstein.

I kind of agreed with Paul Daniels when he suggested that books were better than DVDs, because, when you see someone perform on a DVD, you see someone perform on a DVD. Whereas, when you read an effect in a book, you picture yourself performing it.
Thing is, I can see the merits of seeing it with your own eyes. But, my preferred method of study is dusty book by candle light. |

How about a dvd of just performances...perhaps touted as a 'supplement'.
I would jump right on that, even if I didn't own prism, just for the pure entertainment value. for the record, I see nothing wrong with books being released as dvd's, in fact, I think any argument on the matter is nonsensical. both books and dvd's are common and useful means of media format, and at times live (or recorded) performances shed a whole new light on an effect or technique. as an example, I recall reading "the amateur magicians handbook" as a teenager, and learning 'the pass'. I had learned it well, but had never seen it 'done' correctly. once I saw it demonstrated by a magician at my local shop (hank lees in boston) the proverbial light went off and I realized exactly how it should look. just my 2.125 cents (6.5% sales tax here in massachusetts) |

My favorite part of the NOTHING DVD is where Max sits down with Michael Weber for about 45 minutes ... that's worth the price of the DVD.
... oh and the sight gag with Eugene at the beginning of the Explanation .. And I have Prism ... it would be a blast to see Max actually performing some of these pieces on video ... For instance, The Four Sided Triangle (my favorite). Oscar |
