Anyone know of any reading material on strong man stunts?

I know absolutely nothing about it. So literally everything and anything would be great.

Thanks,

Ros

I hate to direct to a video type source, but this guy does a lot of them-

I seem to recall a lot of historical strongman info on one of Waynes cd-roms. Worth looking into anyways.
And you could always look for a good teacher (Recommended method)

Ordinarily (as Gwyd mentioned above) I'd try to sell you my "On the Midway" CDRom e-book which has among several other things "Secrets of Strong Man Feats" by Ottley Coulter. (Also goes by the name "How to Perform Strong Man Stunts") - You can probably find it free on someone's webpage.

I did find a great new free resource: Brian Brushwood's videocast "Scamschool" which includes "Learn Four Feats of Strength" and "How to Benmd a Thick Nail or Wrench With Your Bare Hands" and "How to Rip a Phonebook In Half" and more.

Hi,

I've ordered the CD-ROM. Don't worry Gwyd, if I'm going to start learning this stuff I'll definitely be looking for a teacher. For now I just want to know what type of stuff is out there. What genuinely uses pure muscle and what doesn't.

Now I'm no World's Strongest Man, so anything too extreme will be out of my league for a while... Although I've got nothing against training if I find a stunt I want to do.

I'll check out Scam School. I've downloaded a few of their videocasts already, but they were mainly bar bet type things.

Thanks for your help, and if anyone else has any further info on the subject.. books, video etc.. please let me know. I'm on an info mission.

Found this site, thanks to Scam School, http://www.dennisrogers.net.

For those that don't know of him, I didn't before today, he's an Oldetime Strongman. He's got some instructional DVDs and oldetime strongman equipment on his site.

Anyway, just wanted to add his site for completeness of the thread.

Hi Ros,
Dennis taught me Phone Book tear, Fork rolling and Nail bending etc. back in 1995. He's a true Professional and super nice guy! If you communicate with him tell him I said Hey! Smile

Most strongman stunts require a powerful grip. Tearing cards and phonebooks, bending nails or steel bars and leveraging sledgehammers or long handle axes.
John Brookfield has some great books. Check out http://www.ironmind.com for training equipment, books and videos.
As mentioned about a year ago on the boards, Steve McGranahan has some really good videos as well.
Be careful not to over train with grip exercises though. Carpal tunnel will occur.
Gywd's instructables link has acts that don't really require as much physical conditioning. Some really good acts.

I have done this one before and it works great. Just make sure the victim holds their arms solid by their sides. I did it to someone who didn't and their arms flew up in the air and hurt them.

Here is a free copy of a 1952 book of strong man stunts that used to be sold in novelty catalogs (Johnson-Smith, etc.)

I had a look to see what else was on the CD and the amount of info just swung it for me, so decided to buy it.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. I shall be working my way through it all.

Recently I added a 4' half inch steel rod bend to my act. It's an on the head bend to get a bend in the rod, I move it to the neck to finish the bend and bring it down to the leg to cross it over so it looks like one of those cause ribbons.
I'm also scrolling a three eights piece of 4' rod, giving it three rings. Like a spring.
Now on to the short bends.
