I just was on a FB thread with a friend of a friend, who's last name is Tarbell. I asked him if he was related to Harlan, and he responded "Who?". How can someone in his late 30's, with that name, never be asked that question?

Are you related to Waldo Superfluous?

I guess it depends on the circles he runs in. Magicians know who Harlan Tarbell was, not the average person. I knew an attorney whose last name was Elway. I asked if she was related to John she just squinted her eyes and asked.... "Who?"
Peace

Good question. On a similar note a woman I work with found out that I was a magician and told me her ex husbands uncle was a magician. I asked if she knew his name and she called him (the husband) and his uncle was JB Bobo!

I'm still puzzling over the Elway thing.

I do know that John Elway plays football, but beyond that, I know nothing about the man, being a person who is only interested enough in football to cheer on U-M when they play Ohio State. |

That's what makes NOTS so great. We find out about obscure talents like Elway, Bobo, Tarbell, Becky Buller, Josh Superfluous....

I think Bobo's original family name was Beaubeaux and they changed it to spell like it was pronounced, Bobo. He wrote what is considered by many the most significant book on coin magic, which is available at most book stores by Dover Press usually, and was considered one of the great magicians of the last century.

I remember being in a bar that my wife's office frequented. The bartender knew I did a little magic and said; "Oh, we got a guy who used to work here, maybe you'd like to meet him?"
I meet this guy and he does a few things and I said; "Hi, I'm Ed Rhodes" and he responds; "Hi, I'm Derek Dingle." I said to my wife; "You expect me to show Derek Dingle something? Why don't I just call up Heifitz (sp) and let him listen to me play 'Chopsticks?'" She said she'd known him for months before he'd left the bar. She knew he did magic but didn't realize he was actually "anybody!"
