I have been fortunate enough to have an inside look at this DVD. A while back Jeff Prace sent a few clips to Kozmo for consideration for Reel Magic. Koz sent me the clips and the effects really fooled me, looked great, had some great new methods, etc. We realized these effects and Jeff deserved their own DVD. Jeff is a great kid. He's creative, respectful, etc. Don't be fooled by his age or his quiet demeanor. Jeff is a creative force to be reckoned with. On this DVD, he's done his homework and given credits, influences, etc. He's really thought these effects through. Very interesting, different, practical, self contained, and strong methods. I consider these effects to be a really wonderful advances to some of the existing gum effects through great new methods. There is also a wonderful new gum effect titled Orbit that is a feature. Highly recommended.

Hey,
First post back on the Café, it's been a while. I was just wondering if you have to use a pack of Orbit for the trick Orbit, or could it be used with say, Stride or something of the nature? Thanks.

Well, I received Jeff's DVD GUM two days ago. I wanted to give it a few days of performing to get a good review. Here it goes
The Ad Copy: Orbit - A pack of gum with only one piece left instantly turns into a full pack. You can then immediately hand out a piece of gum to a hungry spectator. Re-Wrapped - A chewed piece of gum stretched between the magician’s hands magically wraps itself into a brand new piece! Both hands are shown empty and the gum can immediately be given away as a sweet souvenir. Insta-Wrap - Another handling of the chewed to wrapped gum effect. This handling is on STERIODS ! Back in Time - The magician presents a time travel experiment, and in doing so wraps a chewed piece of gum and alters a photograph ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_azmfTevHNw So lets start with the first trick Orbit. You get a few performances live and one in studio performance. He then takes you through how to construct the gimmick. You should have all you need to make the gimmick at home. Each construction of a gimmick actually makes two gimmicks which is kind of convenient to have a spare although the original gimmick should really never wear out. The explanation is very detailed and easy to watch and learn from. This trick is really really great. Its simple, practical, visual, instantly resettable and everything you could ask for. Im really glad he came up with a way to actually have a piece of gum handed out after the appearance because it really makes the effect so much stronger. This is probably my favorite on the DVD. Reactions are very solid and its a perfect quick trick to do. The next trick is Re-Wrapped. This trick is really the only trick on the DVD that doesn't require a decent amount of construction. Actually, there is none. Its a very clever method. The spectator can actually see the gum stretched between your hands and then you just rub and it is now a full piece of gum, with nothing left in your hands. The gum can be handed out in this which again, is a great feature. The reactions from this are really good as well. People look at you strange when you pull the gum out of your mouth to offer them but what you do next is just completely unexpected it really gives a surprise factor. This is another visual effect. This is something I WILL perform. Thirdly, we have Insta-Wrap. This is a version of Re-Wrapped. It has its downsides and payoffs compared to re-wrapped. Firstly, the gum cannot be stretched but is displayed at the finger tips which is still good, but not as visual as re-wrapped. The upside to it is that your hand closes around the gum and when you open, there lays a wrapped piece of gum and absolutely NOTHING else. This is EXTREMELY clean. Again, the gum can then be handed out to the spectator. The reactions from this are just as good as re-wrapped. Only a magician would be able to react differently as they can see what the true difference is. I really have a tough time deciding which I like better. Re-Wrapped or Insta-Wrap? I would have to say its an even tie. Both are visual, clean pieces of magic. The final trick is Back In Time. This isn't my favorite trick because it's more of a situational trick that you would do maybe at a gig or a more professional area. That being said, I still think this is a good trick. It all revolves around a photo you place on the table at the beginning of the trick. The change of the gum is less visual as it takes place in a film canister but the main focus is that the picture has now changed on the table which I can see to be a nice kicker ending. Not my favorite, but not bad. Finally, there is an easter egg on the DVD. It is Jeff's No More Card Tricks that was published in a Reel Magic issue. It is a really nice trick. You have to dedicate a deck of cards to it but it can be easily disassembled if you really really need a deck of cards. its a very visual trick that is a nice addition to the DVD. All in all I highly recommend this DVD. It is easy, visual and practical magic that will always get a reaction. Pick this up and I don't think you will be disappointed. You can purchase GUM through Jeff himself here: http://jeffpracemagic.com/ Here is a video of the Reel Magic issue Jeff was in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMB92IuS2Lg Hope this helps you make a better decision. |

The reason I ask is that sometimes people review DVDS or tricks and later we find out that they are friends with the person or got the DVDS for free if they'd do a review. I think it's fine to help friends, or do reviews with DVDS they received for free, but I wish they'd disclose the information in their review. Are you a hobbyist like me, or did you perform these tricks at shows ( or restaurant work )? I ask because you performed the tricks two days after getting the DVD. It takes me allot of practice before I can perform a trick and I was curious what your experience is. Please understand that it's because of others that I'm being cautious about Café reviews. I'm sure if you don't know Jeff and bought the DVDS you won't be offended that I asked. I don't intend to be insulting and am just trying to spend my money on the best products. Thank you for not being offended by my questions so that I can make a better purchasing decision! Joe

I do know Jeff, and I didn't pay for the DVD but I didn't feel the need to say that because my review is unbiased. I know what tricks I will use and wont use. The tricks aren't complicated sleight wise so the tricks don't take a lot of practice at all to be able to perform. If you have the right materials, some of the tricks can literally be performed directly after watching the DVD. I know what you mean about reviews and I don't like biased reviews either which is why I made my review unbiased. I am not just a hobbyist, I do some restaurant work but I would not perform the gum tricks in a restaurant, orbit being the exception, as they require you to put your hands near your mouth and handle "chewed" gum. Not the most sanitary idea to be doing at a restaurant. You don't need to worry about me being friends with Jeff as it has no impact. I have been performing Orbit and Re-Wrapped daily for friends. I did them both many times yesterday at Thanksgiving and today at a band practice I was attending. They kill and that is the honest truth. I promise you wont regret it if you purchase this. If you purchase it and find any of my review unhonest, please let me know. Hope this help.

Nico, I appreciate you writing and explaining the situation. It helps to know that you have some performing experience because people that do have a different perspective than myself. I think a hobbyist like me has allot to offer as far as what I like and what tricks have gone over well for family and friends. But someone that performs for people they don't know also has experience that helps in reviews.
Thank you for not being mad that I asked those questions and I appreciate your honesty and extra insight. I know Jeff from Reel Magic and I think he's very gifted and I enjoyed watching him perform No More Card Tricks ( fooled and entertained me, that's for sure. Best, Joe

Jeff Prace’s GUM
A magic DVD based around GUM tricks. I realise instantly that GUM magic will not suit everyone’s performing style. But I fell Jeff’s DVD still offer’s something awesome for each person. The effects are simple, direct, clean and completely workable. I’ve loved effects with organic props and things that people can relate to, so gum was a welcome treat. You will be provided with a DVD which is fantastically produced. The cover design it cute, the menu is simple to negotiate through, the picture is sharp and the sound is crystal clear. One minor warning. You will be required to pick up quite a few things in order to create every trick on the DVD. This being said, a lot of the stuff you will most probably already have. The additional stuff is inexpensive and usually easy to get hold of. For UK customers like me, you may find it hard to find a certain type of GUM used on the DVD. If you can’t find them, it’s very easy to adapt the effects to different kinds of gum. My issue upon watching the trailer was, “it’s a gum trick, how clever could it possibly be?”. After viewing the DVD, ill take that thought and bin it. The effects are just brilliant. The opening trick on the DVD is the Orbit effect. This is possibly the easiest effect to make up with the least amount of additional things to make it. The GUM is easily found in the UK and most probably the same in the US. The effect actually plays really strongly. It’s an incredibly simple effect with many variable presentations, but it knocks them deck. Jeff’s convincer (handing the piece of gum out) really drives home that the gum is indeed real. It packs very small and it is completely contained. Meaning it slips right into the pocket. No angle issues, no moves and fresh minty smiles all round. Jeff also gives us some additional thoughts and idea’ with ORBIT including how to switch the packet for a real packet if you so need too. The second effect on the DVD will take a little more building but it really is clever and clean. The effect in which you take gum from your mouth, place it in your hand, squeeze around the gum, open the hand to show it’s fully wrapped and hand it out. It’s actually that clean. To be able to do this effect with one hand is just the best. The method is diabolical. You will be required to grab hold of a couple of things. Everything is once again easy to get hold of and Jeff teaches everything with clarity. This is a brilliant effect to perform and kills the audience. There is nothing for them to pick apart. The third trick (insta Wrap) is possibly my favourite on the DVD. Again, it’s deadly simple but just cool! You take gum from you mouth; stretch it to show it real gum, Rub it at finger tips and it instantly changes to a wrapped piece of gum. Then hand it out with no switches! Sounds to good to be true but it is that clean. By far my favourite effect. Jeff again does a superb job of teaching it and it can be very easily adapted to fit other types of gum. It again plays absolutely awesomely to the audience. It kills. There is nothing for them to see other then what’s happening. The method is genius. Very Very simple but this makes it incredibly workable. The final trick on the DVD is Back in Time. This is more of a routine trick. There are several different things going on all at once in order to get the effect to work. The idea’s routed in this effect really do strike a cord. I love any effect that uses photo’s. Jeff’s handling for this is also interesting. He’s taken some old principles and idea’s and whipped them into something refreshing and new. It has the visual side of the gum transforming and the photo which will draw patter and chat after the trick. It also leaves them with an interesting object at the end if you have refill photo’s. It’s all very easy to make and a cute little piece. You will have to sacrifice a little bit of pocket space for this one and there are some very minor angle issues, but, with some work, it will become a little miracle. The last effect on the DVD is one that Jeff hasn’t mentioned. He included a secret Easter egg on the DVD. If you click right with your remote on the main menu, it will pop up. This is a very cool card effect which I remember reading in MAGIC magazine not to long ago. No More Card Tricks is a brilliant quick card trick which has an absolutely killer ending. I really love this effect and remember using it when I first saw it. It’s simple to make and fun to perform. It’s offbeat finally really catches the audience out. Most DVD’s have extra’s which are usually rubbish. The fact that the DVD is packed with cool effect AND the bonus effect I equally as cool, makes for a happy magician. Lastly, there’s extra’s and bloopers which are actually kind funny. Some creepy guys on there… enough said. Overall, Jeff’s DVD will not be for every performer but the effects on the DVD is clean, simple, clever and irrevocably practical! Everything you need in a top magic DVD. Just think, if he’s 15 now and coming up with this sort of material, the magic community has a lot to look forward to in the future. Awesome Job! Jamie Daws

I just finished watching the DVD and if you like what you see in the trailer, then there is no reason for someone to be disappointed with GUM.
The construction for Orbit is very well done and seems it would last a very long time and it was nice to see someone put the principal involved into such an everyday thing as a pack of gum. Re-Wrapped and Insta-Wrap are the same effect, just different methods, which both show creativity and think people will be split on which to perform,as they both have there pro's and cons, but personaly I like Re-Wrapped the best. Back in time was something I enjoyed as much as anything on the DVD and I guess that's because I was a Bartender/restaurant Magician for ten years and loved the way he presented everything and it also leaves people feeling like they have got to know you on a more personal level Which is a huge plus. To me,Back in time is a very good example of structuring, presentation and managment of props and could not help but be impressed with the level of creativity that was displayed. Bonus No More card tricks will catch you by surprise and make you want to rewind to watch it again before learning it,but just remember, after you watch it the very first time just stop and think how you feel and you will know the impact that this can have. Also,i feel you can do more magic with the cards before going into NMCT'S,But I would only consider that if I wanted to do a small card set and end with this without having to do a deck switch. The way it is done on the DVD is fine and no deck switch is needed,so I guess what I'm saying is you can do a nice card set with this and never have to do a deck switch. I for one look forward to seeing new talent and to me,this was a joy to watch and wish Jeff nothing but the very best. Steve Haynes |
