Is the SEO the same for HTML and Flash websites? Or does HTML delivers a stronger SEO?

The text in a flash site cannot be easily read by a search engine which can hurt your ranking because your content plays a key role in determining your relevance to a given query (what searches you will come up on and your placement.) There are tricks you can use, like this: http://www.hochmanconsultants.com/articl......sh.shtml There are also ways you can embed text into the page that the search engine would index in place of the flash. Another popular approach is to use flash for parts of the page, and regular HTML in other places (like an flash header/menu and html text (be sure to have regular html links on your pages as well as the flash nav) Just some thoughts. |

Also with flash the search engines can not link to internal sections because there are no EXTERNAL links into Flash
so you homepage ends up being your landing page for EVERY keyword phrase you want to rank for which is bad for business unless you want to have MANY different websites for many different keyword phrases

Hi Mike -
I'm here. I don't know enough about the topic of HTML vs. Flash to chime in. I just know that HTML has a reputation for being more search engine friendly and more user friendly. - Donald

My (now very out-dated) website was authored in FLASH. I have very good search results (try typing 'close-up magic Scotland' in Google). I've used very specific meta tags. This way many of the optimisation issues can be resolved.

Meta tags, content, keywords on the basic landing page still matters.
However, growing in ever more importance is the power of incoming links from top-ranked and relevant sites. Part of your SEO strategy should absolutely involve an ongoing effort to get your website's URL on the pages of quality websites relevant to your website. It's the equivalent in Google's eyes of having solid testimonials for your website. --Jack

The biggest problem with flash is you only get 1 landing page and that is your home page.. so if you have a large set of keywords your ranking for it's hard to target your content for EVERYTHING..
It can be done but most of the time it is done at the expence of targeted traffic to targeted content because of having to bring them in to a generic landing page then directing them to the targeted content.. which most users will just go back to google and try again.. Flash should still be used sparingly in my opinion.. and will in the long run hurt your conversion example... your ranking for Birthday entertainment the blue link in google is generic because its for your entire site, not for a page specificly on Birthdays.. so it gets LESS clicks they click and hit you homepage (because search engines can not link to internal flash pages) and then have to click on Birthday's in your menu or they search for corporate entertainment the blue link is once again generic because both sets of traffic are entering your website through the same portal and landing page.. the problem isn't about ranking it .. the problem is targeting the traffic to get higher conversions and lower bounce rate.. and that is something that the current technology just won't allow.. they are working on it, and I wish they would fix it.. just my opinion though

Not an expert on Flash, but one thing that drives me crazy is a Flash site that takes 5 - 15 seconds to load and runs an intro before you can enter the site.
I've been in video production and graphic design for 25 years. When special effects became available to the average production house, it seemed every video had to have fancy spin video wipes, page turns and spinning cubes of motion video. That's tapered off because bells and whistles don't replace good content. Fancy splash pages can make a good first impression, but are annoying to returning customers. A suggestion, based on your current site: use a larger font. The pony ride page is very readable, but the magic page has a lot of small type squashed together. Derek may say his site is outdated, but it loads in a second and gets straight down to business. I'm looking forward to seeing your final product. Dave

I can not wait until the final product is done also. It is a whole new website. I do not know if I shall keep the present one.

One bit of advice that came out of Google, is to view the site using lynx, a text only web browser. This will let you see what the web crawlers will see.

Yeah and unless your webmaster is a PRO at action script and knows how to pull the text from XML files the search engines cant read the text
