Hi all,
Being a beginner (Most of you realise by now, with the amount of posts I've done!). What are the suggested Magicians to get good at card magic by watching them? Now, I don't mean suggestions like the usal "Read Royal Road to Card Magic!" or "McBrides AOS". I don't mean the best of the best who fool you, I'm talking easy to understand, a pleasure to view, fantastic tricks along with detail explainations. So far I'd say Oz Pearlman teaches well, Bill Malone is ok in "on the loose". I think Bill is awesome and my inspirationt o learn card magic but sometimes his explainations skip or miss details. What suggestions of magicians can you suggest to the learner of card magic? Thanks Waz! |

Hello Waz
For teaching, I would personally recommend the following: 1) Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights (8 Volumes) 2) Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles (if nothing else get this set!) 3) Any DVD from Harry Lorayne (So I hear, I'm going to purchase a set soon myself) I hope this helps.

I would also suggest based on your requirements that you get Lorayne's material. It is well explained and to the point and he has some excellent effects.

Absolutely what Irfaan said.
I have Royal Road, Darlyl's, Ammar's, Mallone's ad Lorayne's. If you mainly want sleights, go with Royal Road or Daryl's. If you mainly want tricks then Loryane's "Best Ever" is great and so is Ammar's "ETMCM". You may also want to do some fun flourishes to add to your tricks. For that a good one is The Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes 1 and 2 by Jerry Cestkowski. If got all the above you would have more than enough to last a long long time.

I recently came back to magic and have to say that Harry Lorayne's books and DVD's are very well explained. The teaching is excellent and there are so many great effects that I've been kept up late many nights being entertained and taught by him. Thank you, Mr. Lorayne!

I heartily agree with all of the recommendations so far! But I would also recommend someone who seems to get overlooked - Aldo Colombini! I think he is very good, especially for beginners. Check out his "Impromptu Card Magic" series (it's up to 6 volumes now). No difficult sleights, no gimmicks, and lots of fun! You always get a lot of bang for the buck with Aldo. So, in addition to the others, do yourself a favor and add Aldo to your list.

The list above is excellent. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Personally, I think Colombini & Ammar are the two easiest to learn from. Even Colombini's books are easy to learn from and I can't recommend him enough for that. I also have the "Best Ever" series and Daryl's "Encyclopedia of Card Sleights" on DVD. Even though they were transferred from video tape to DVD format (Ammar's ETMCM is the same way), they translate well into the new medium. Among the four of them, Ammar, Colombini, Daryl, and Lorayne, I would be hard pressed as to which one to recommend first, as they are all great teachers. Now if only I could get my Ammar VHS tapes moved over to dvd, that would really be great!

I definitely agree that Daryl, Ammar and Lorayne, are the "big three" when it comes to teaching card magic, but I'd also like to mention Greg Wilson, whose DVD on the double lift ("Double Take")is still, I think the best source for learning this absolutely critical sleight.
-Rob P.S. I don't have any of Columbini's card dvds--but based on the material of his that I do have, I doubt you could go wrong with him, either... |

In addition to the wonderful magicians and items already mentioned I would also suggest Gerry Griffins "Complete Card Magic Series" and Brad Burt's "CORE Card Course"

At some point get something for Juan Tamariz as he explains the thinking behind each part of an effect, and how to turn a 30 second trick into a 5 minute effect.
