I have an idea for moving spirits and need a glowing zombie ball. I saw Marco Tempest do this type of effect at Magic Live (wasn't a zombie routine though) and don't necessarily need his but something similar would be great. Anybody got any leads on where to pick something like this up.
Thanks all

I have found clear plastic balls at craft stores like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. They come as two hemispheres that fit together. I have found some that are perfect Zombie size, too. You can glue them together using plastic solvent (for styrene models). Then cut away the little hanger tab and carefully drill a hole on that same spot. You can gradually widen the hole (be carefull not to crack the ball). A Dremel with a sanding drum works very well for this. Widen the hole just to the size you want for the gimmick you plan to use.

Now, take a fine grade of steel wool and rub the ball until it is completely frosted over. To illuminate it, you'll need a tiny battery-operated LED light. These are sometimes sold as funky little jewelry items at carnivals, but you should be able to locate one somewhere. In lieu of this, one of those tiny glow sticks would also work, but you'd have to replace it after several hours. They are often sold in the form of earrings, but I've also seen them as an accessory for night fishing.

Whatever light thingy you get, you should be able to attach it on the business end of the gimmick so it ends up inside the ball. It should glow nicely!

That's cool, never thought of that. Great idea. Have you or anyone seen the Electric Floating and Glowing Ball that Hocus Pocus sells?

I haven't heard of it, but that would certainly simplify things! Smile

Just got the glowing ball for HP. It is lightweight, changes to 4 or 5 colors and can stop at one of the colors. I like it.

Sounds like I have the same one. The only two drawbacks - it doesn't work with a standard gimmick (although the one it comes with is OK - and is magnetic) and when to switch it on! I use it in conjuction with De-lites and sponge balls! (grabs lights from the air, work some 'business' place them in a bag - blow them out and pour out a bunch of small sponge balls, turn them into a large sponge ball that turns into the red glowing zombie, zombie routine).

Thanks - I'm still experimenting with it. "The bag of lites" was only added recently - not sure where it's going after the zombie yet!

I have thought of a kid show where the d'lites could be fireflies you catch. you could add matching LEDs to a decorative tree, like an artificial bonsai tree, and add the fireflies to the tree branches one by one and they turn on.

but I could never think of a finish for this... then what?

It might work better the other way around - start with all the lights on the tree, then 'remove' them, using the 'lights' in another trick (which is what I do with the sponge balls, and later the glowing zombie). Another option would be to add the lights to the tree and pick them off, producing paper flowers from the tree where the light was. (paper flowers always go well with kids)...just some thoughts...
