Hello! Stashu with a question or two for you..
Does anyone have a mentor, if so, how did it go? Would you recommend having one or no? How do you go about finding a mentor? what qualifications does one need to be considered a mentee? What is the cost associated with this service? Why am I asking??? I work in ad-sales and aside from drinking a 6 pack of redbull everyday, the only other thing that helped me increase my sales numbers was mentor help from experienced reps. It was a hassle of course, since the most successful sales reps are incredibly busy being successful, they have almost no time available to help anyone else out. I asked a couple reps if they would mind looking over my sales scripts, or if I could tag along while they went on sales calls and I tell you, 4 said no, 1 said yes and it made all the difference in the world. How much difference? A 20% increase in monthly ad sales revenue. Since then, I have participated in countless sales workshops, and joined a couple of sales related associations. So, my question now is where can someone go for MENTALISM CONSULTATION SERVICES? I ask because It worked/ is working like a charm in sales! Is there anyone out there that offers this service? Are there associations people can join without stringent admission policies? Networking events? Is there a blindfolded coffin ritual to get into these groups? Do I hang out in a Café forum for 10 years jibber jabbering with everyone until everyone knows me by my legal name and can trust me enough to lend a hand with questions/scripting/ FX ideas? |

You don't need a mentor, you already have practical mental magic from Anneman.
What else ?

Hi Parmenion! I always love hearing your input and you know this is almost what I knew I could expect by asking something like this here.
But to answer your question, Why do I need a mentor when I have practical mental effects?? I actually just had an hour long conversation with Practical Mental Effects, it dident say much, it sat at my kitchen table like a hunk of paper bound by glue would. It dident offer me suggestions on patter, it dident provide and negative or positive critism. Why take swimming lessons, just read a book about swimming, no need to ask people who do it everyday how they do it or why it works for them, Ill JUST READ A BOOK....in fact, maybe Ill become a lawyer, but why go to Law School if I own a law textbook? Ill just become a lawyer by reading a book... actually, I read a medical textbook, surely I have the knowledge to practise medicine! Actually we can probably forget this thread ever existed... because after reading through 1000s of posts here I see the same old bologna, and childish drivle... Like I said, the SUCCESSFUL mentalists are too BUSY DOING, to waste time TALKING over who has the best imp pad, or where I can find the best nw, or waste thier time engaging in X vs. X posts where the only replies you find are X is better because I feel its better... anyways that's fine, I AM NEVER POSTING HERE AGAIN, and I am never signing back into my acct... Ill leave this forum forever for people like you, who, prefer READING about mentalism... have you ever heard that the highest form of knowledge is gained through teaching!!! I don't have time to buy everyones ebooks, write fluffed up and hyped up reviews, kiss everyones bum and hope and pray that one day I will fit in here... Your right forget mentors if you want something right do it yourself. You know, out of all the groups ive ever belonged to, and all the people ive ever talked to, don't REPLY, there is no use, Im outta here, Ill write everything myself, do everyting myself, and INVENT MY OWN EFFECTS and LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE instead of asking anyone for help ever again. |

Stop booing and have some Red Bull.
You asked a good question. My advice is identify the mentor you want and go and ask them. Be ready to demonstrate your commmittment. Ant

That was overly tough parmenion...
I'd say follow anthony's advice - whats the worst you are going to be told? no... then you can sit on a forum and answer questions in an angry manner!

Richard Osterlind has been a mentor to many of us here on the Café, through these forums, through his blog, through his DVDs, through his books, through e-mail exchanges, through phone calls and through lectures.
Floyd Collins has been a great help to me (aceofharts on the Café) and really offered keen insights into structuring my show. Like Richard Osterlind, I have had the opportunity to learn and bounce ideas off of him via these forums, e-mails and face-to-face. Also, members of I.B.M. Ring 71 in Cincinnati aided me a lot, especially Leland Pennington. Can't say enough about Leland's help. He got me back into magic/mentalism after many years. Bobby

Sounds like you've already done this once successfully with your career. Why not repeat that process? Find you local magic society, find some mentalists and ask them for help.
I also agree with Rob, I feel like Richard has been close to a personal mentor for years, despite being trapped in the TV or numerous books. Michael Weber's book "Maximum Entertainment" also makes a great mentor, there are suggestions in there which come across like honest advice from friend who knows.(It doesn't talk though, well, mine doesn't anyway). Good luck, |

The stress of ad sales has gotten to him. I did it but the process never made me think of asking the same question.
A mentalist consulting service is a great idea. I know that it would have helped me out tremendously. The only problem is there are not very many mentalists around here -rural Oklahoma. This is a serious prospect that would have to be built with those willing to teach and those willing to be taught by a person. Robwar brought up an important point by using Osterlind as an example. Most of us have several DVDs that we use to learn from and those fine people on the DVDs become the mentors for a significantly reduced price, I'll bet. As far as Redbull, I like the stuff but it seems to be like cigarettes where you have to drink more and more to get the effect as it was the first time.(Drinking Redbull not cigarettes) Stashu buddy, I apologize but in my mind's eye I see you as Eric Cartman telling everyone "screw you guys, I'm going home." |

I have a colleague who is quite creative and whose opinion I respect highly. Curiously though, he performs no mentalism...

I think a mentor finds you. You put yourself in front of a variety of performers. If Your demeanor, work effort, general attitude strike a chord with one or more, you can find yourself getting the best kind of help--help generated ones unconditional love of mentalism. Few things in life are more emotionally satisfying than having helped someone on the road to success. That is how it works for me.

I was going to suggest he contact Bruce Bernstein. Bruce does exactly this, albeit for a fee. However, it's the best money you'll ever spend.
But since he's never coming back.... |
