In america Halloween is not demonic or pagan. It is on the same day as Samhain (pronounced Sow-in for those who want to sound knowledgeable), but only neo-pagans and christian fundamentalists seem to know it.
Rather it is a HUGE holiday. Kids go to school in costumes, go trick-or-treating in the evening and get MASSIVE amounts of candy. Schools, rec. houses, individuals and even ...churches! have haunted houses. Spirit theatre is fairly popular in the general October time period. People who do not celebrate halloween are by far the exception here. There are a couple spook look-don't see effects in "paths to enchantment" by Malcolm Yaffe. skull from the bucket looks very funny and very good for halloween, but I haven't tried it yet ...does anyone know where to get lazy tongs?

Steve, how about a Hamburger puppet?
I get lots of shows in restaurants and I bought Your donut puppet for my jobs in a donut shop, your pizza trick for Pizza Hut and now all I need is a talking hamburger for McDonalds and Burger King. Then I think I have all the restaurants covered. Steve |

Seadog,
I have many pagan friends here in America that celebrate the Pagan holidays. For the record in Wicca both males and females are witches, there are no wizards.

MikeHMagic,
I assume your comments on witches being male and female were not directed at me. Perhaps they were and you were right in general. The neo-pagan community is very diverse however and includes more than just wicca. There are indeed people (even in some branches of Wicca) that identify as wizards and some who even call themselves warlocks (which is more than a little silly, based on etymology but fair in common usage). Of course there are many neo-pagans who celebrate Samhain, and many who even call it Halloween. I am among them. My post was meant to describe the general feelings about Haloween in America. It is primarily considered, and celebrated as, a secular holiday. Pagans (a very small percentage of the population) celebrate it's original intent, and fundamentalists protest it. Other than those groups I think it's pretty much just candy, scary movies, vampires and sexy nurses. Sorry for rambling, ...my point was, I agree. How about" -a spongeball jack-o-lantern routine? -or misers dream with chocolate gold coins? -bank night style routine where a kid gets the one treat instead of the x-many tricks? -ghost themed zombie ball routine? -a running gag of a monster or _____ picking on you throughout the show? -Latex hounds of hell from "The Dark Waltz" (Just kidding on that one of course) -Houdini seance, or any other light hearted seance (this is the one thing I liked in "Magic for older kids" DVD) -mentalism, dressed up with a ghost story (khan artist with letter cards and you spell out the name of a killer, or monster, or favorite candy) -that hand, that's you hand, that looks alive and story about how you got it -an appearing disappering ghost or skeleton -haunted deck or haunted hank (already themed ) -Okito doll (this is for small to medium sized groups, but it gets a great reaction when used with a glorpy. I got my set from yourmagic.com and I use there routine) -what about a story with kids picking on you while you were trick or treating and you used magic to protect yourself/ get even. This could be funny, or it could be serious and it could haunt and disturb you to this very day. -what if your puppet is in a costume and playing tricks on you. This was mostly just stream of thought stuff, but I think some of it's pretty good. Posted: Sep 18, 2009 8:27pm Oh wait! two more ideas. I think I might try these out, what do you guys think? -appearing/disappearing skeleton/monster in a stack of blank cards (using false counts, flustrations, et cetera) -Torn and restored vampire. So many vampire movies and TV shows. A paper doll vampire is cut, ripped, dissolved, et cetera by the townspeople and nothing harms him (anyone remember Eddie Murphy, "This is the heart, this is the stomach"). Lastly the sun come up, maybe the old idea of being tricked into arguing to long, and he bursts into flames(flash paper) and turns into a vampire lollipop. OR he bursts into flames with a serious or tongue-in-cheek warning that he may come back if ever _______.

Mike, what you have to understand about the Café is that they don't care who you are or what you've done. People here LOVE to come off as an expert. There are very few who actually want to help each other. I'd encourage you to take the show, dress up some props, change some scripts, and go for it. For next year, think about routines that would take some time and work. If you want to do Halloween magic for adults, look into books by Eugene Burger. Best of luck, my friend. May you forever deflect the negativity of the Café!

He out and out says, "I'm not going to do the work because I just want everyone here to give me what I want." He is d**m well lucky he didn't get roasted! Instead, people came around and did actually give him some genuine and good advice, myself included. Now, your opening comments are offensive and then you continue in your comments to offer some "expert" advice. Maybe it is that sense of entitlement some of the youth of today have that led you to make your comments. Perhaps you've been burned by someone or other here at the Café that made you write what you did. Perhaps you think of yourself as an expert and were upset when people didn't agree with you or take you seriously and your ego was hurt in another thread. I don't know. But, I'm responding because I happen to know that there are a good number of decent people here at the Café who have offered their advice based on years of experience on a wide range of topics to a vast number of people. Many of these performers take the time to explain details about technique, presentation, running your business and other topics that can only come from years on stage. This type and volume of advice, given almost instantly, would be unavailable to other performers if not for something like the Café. And it's FREE for the asking. Hundreds of mentors helping out, who ask for nothing in return. There has not always been agreement on all topics, but open debate is not necessarily a negative thing. |

I just want everyone to know I did take time to look it up. I just wanted to see if there was any update after all these years that might help me with this show that's all.

My thoughts (which are worth every cent you paid for them ) are that internet discussions are so volatile because we only get the words, but not the tonality or body language. So "I'm to lazy to look" might be taken one way, when it was really just a joke, or a commentary or anyone of a number of things.
It's like walking down the street and bumbing into someone, usually you both apologize and walk on, but in a car if someone cuts you off, it's just assumed they are an a***ole and a bad driver. Anyways, I don't know what anyone though of any of my ideas above. Some I've tried and some I just thought of, it was fun exercise though and got me thinking for next year. With a little planning I think I could do a whole halloween show. usually do a bizarre show/seance around halloween (adults only), but haven't done much in the way of themed childrens shows.

You are also correct. When stuff is put into words on here, it may be said in jest but will not come over in the same way it was meant to.

Mysticalmike,
Did you end up putting some halloween stuff together for the show? There was some tension in the beginning of the thread, but I'd love to hear what you did (or are going to do) and how it went.

You know what... heres the thing. I came on here today LOOKING for the exact same thing. Some advice for a Halloween show I'm doing for my son's school.
Know what I found? A bunch of people !@#$%ing about how, Instead of starting a thread and just asking, You should "Look it up". But obviously when you "look it up" all you find are threads in which people whine like babies that any info should be looked up. Because (I assume), It takes a personal toll on some to have to try to ignore the threads they don't like. Most of you should be ashamed of yourselves. If you don't want to answer the guys request, pass the thread up for god's sake. Don't turn it into a two page thread of crying like little kids.

Mike,
I to would be interested in how things are going for you. On an aside, do you have a webpage or video? I am always looking for other entertainers to recommend in our area when I am booked up. Which is happening a lot more often thanks to the great advise that is free flowing out here on the Café. Chris |
