I stumbled into this on eBay:
http://tinyurl.com/otn68l I bought it because it just has 4 pull-out drawers and a very large (deep) top compartment. The faux Gerstner chests they have at Harbor Freight Tools is just too busy with 12-14 drawers of varying sizes, most of which are too small for anything but a couple of coin purses and some cards. This bamboo chest fit my needs perfectly. Postage was included with the purchase price and it's packed and shipped in one of the best corner padded boxes I've ever seen. Mine went completely across the USA by truck from Florida to California with 0% damage. Mine sucked up all the wax I gave it. It appears to be unfinished, so staining it any color you want should be a very easy project. I liked the natural look of the bamboo, so a thorough treatment with "Renaissance" wax did the job for me. 20 minutes of rubbing and orbital buffing later, it glows. This is extremely well made. I would never put it in the category of a true Gerstner chest, but for $90.00 delivered, it's an amazing value. I think it's a perfect match for all of your close-up props. I give it a 10 out of 10 for usability and quality of build. It holds all my small props and much, much more and does so in a nicely crafted way. Check it out. dsalley13 |

Very nice! How heavy is it? Is there a handle on top? How deep and long are the drawers?
Thanks! Dan. |

The drawers are almost 2 inches deep. The top well is about the same, but it has a shell-like hollow top that offers 2 more inches of total depth for the top.
The width of the drawers is 22-1/8 inches. The top well is about 3/4 of an inch wider. It weighs about 20 lbs. empty. I can lift it easily. After about 30-40 lbs. of props and coins are in it, I need help lifting it. :o) It really does hold an incredible amount of stuff. For $90.00, it's darn hard to beat. The practicality for my needs, of only having 4 drawers and a big top well, made it perfect. It's good looks and great build make it even better. The hardware is nice too. It's not high-end brass, but it appears very good and serviceable. It's mostly going to sit in one room for me, so portability wasn't a real factor, just a nice bonus. dsalley13 |

Something I forgot to mention......
The top drawer automatically locks when you close the lid and use the metal closures. They include a nice 3 inch wide long strip of bamboo to fit in and have the lid lock all the drawers. I assume this is so no drawers will open up inadvertently when moving the the chest. It has locks in each shackle too. They include 1 key, but it looks very generic and you could probably use any suitcase key to open the shackles. The wooden strip all drawer lock-out/safety is not discussed in any of the ad-copy. It was a nice surprise. dsalley13 |

That box would be nice for storing props at home, but it's too heavy to take to a gig.

Bamboo! Nice...
You're not getting a "bamboo" machinists tool chest at Harbor Freight. |

Sam's Club has them too. Check your local Sam's.

This one is pretty spiffy. Great price too....for now.... If it was bamboo, I'd buy it.
I hope someone here gets this one: http://tinyurl.com/y9gytf5 dsalley13 |

The one at harbor freight is two inches narrower than the one dsalley has mentioned. It also does not appear to be bamboo.

At Lowes in a big GA city the other day I saw them for $49.95. I bought three and gave them as Xmas gifts. A nice machinists cabinet would cost hundreds 25 years ago. I can imagine that a fine wood, hand-crafted machinist cabinet would be especially nice.

Wow!
50 bucks at Lowes, that`s gotta be the lowest price yet. I can`t even buy the wood for that. Restoring those old antique chests has proven to be very popular as of late,if one likes woodworking as a hobby. The machinistchest is a good all around tote,it was called a suitcase tool chest once upon a time. It can be a bit heavy a 20" chest would be just about 20 pounds. I thought someone would make this one disappear. Here`s a link to a vintage Union. http://www.machinistchest.com/site/produ......b=images MC |

The stock at Sam's Club varies from store to store. One of the managers told me that they have absolutely no say in what their stores stock. It's up to the whim of the buyers.

http://www.gerstnerusa.com/ They are still around and will make you a custom box. I owned several Gerstner boxes over the years. I wish to say, only buy the ones made in Dayton, Ohio USA, the boxes made by them under their specs in China don not add up to the quality of the ones made in Dayton. H R Gerstner is one of the finest toolbox makers in the world. Also, if you own an old Gerstner you can get parts and even have them recondition it at the shop in Dayton.
I will say the Bamboo box does look good for the price but I am a Gerstner man from day one. Bill Montana |
