Hi there,

for my new presentation I decided to bring the old chinese prayer vase effect back on stage. As a matter of fact I couldn´t find any description, videos or similar stuff about the effect. I almost finished my routine but still looking for some interesting presentation ideas, some climax.... Perhaps, anyone of you has an idea or can tell me how he shows this effect, how he closes the routine...

Thank you all in advance. Hoping to get lots of postings.

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the Café!

I have a modest collection of these. Several vintage pieces, but also several that are simply beautiful little vases that work well for the trick. It was one of my favorites as a kid. The first ever photo of me doing magic is with this trick.

You can find some info in print in "Greater Magic".

If you're referring to the vase that will somehow hold the rope inside, Memphis magician and former host of the longest-running TV magic show in U.S. history, Dick Williams came up with a very original idea and used it back in the 70s. He eventually manufactured, marketed and sold his vase beginning in the 1980s. Nothing was added to or taken away from the vase at any time during the routine. The vase is handled by and looked into by the spectator during the performance of the routine, as well. Vase is inverted, rope is inserted and the rope stays there. Fantastic prop, fantastic routine and fantastic idea. It'll fool anyone, even those children who have one from a magic set.
