Bloody Hell! As sceptical as I am, I kept focussed on the screen during the program and I genuinely felt heavy and unable to move... for up to a minute. I had moved by the time the 'unsticking' messages up.
My limbs still feel a little heavy but I am nice and relaxed. One thought though... if someone was 'stuck', how did they manage to phone in..?? Anyone else affected? |

You could phone in as he told you to keep the phone next to you and the experiment was to get stuck to the sofa, not your arms
when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth

I was stuck to my chair by Derren Brown!!!!
For a whole hour, I didn't move during the show. Then I had to go to the loo Better than last week though I though, but don't you get the suspicion that a lot of preshow took place this week? |

Didn't get stuck - but thought it was a terrific show. A hundred times better than the lottery one. And it firmly disproves all that rubbish about magicians not liking the lottery show because they don't like being fooled. I wasn't over impressed last week and it didn't fool me. But I loved this weeks show and a couple of the routines fooled the arse off me!
By the way, the idea Derren used of revealing a hidden message (or something similar) using those UV pens also appears in a couple of routines (by Liam Montier) in Peter Duffie's new Mindblasters 2 eBook. |

Oh just a much, much better show tonight! This was Derren on top form. We gave it a go but neither I nor Mrs P got stuck to our seat, however we're both cynics and didn't expect to be
Wasn't so enamoured of the hobo sketch but the giraffe & chair/blocks/ticket stub routines were wonderful bits of TV mentalism. If I wore a hat, I'd doff it: well done DB and team. Good telly. |

Really Enjoyed the show
Even thought it was pure suggestion. All the effects were just convincers and then the chair sticking was very similar to a hands stuck together induction! I love the white screen that wont work on the internet!! But the induction before it - with simple Kenesilogy was effective. Great show Marc |

The chair routine was lovely...colour of chair, colour of pen, order of blocks, and number of ticket...classic!

The studio, with the performing space in the middle of the audience reminds me of "Top of the Pops."
I no longer smoke camel cigarettes.

Resticting the head movement with the imaginary circle was a great idea I have not heard before. Beats a finger on the forehead Try standing up without moving your gead forward more than a few inches.
Also loved the clearing tone. He used this in his stage show too although the sound was much more comedic there. Is PWA a ribbing of NLP Great show and no doubt there will be a few people who panicked. I look forward to the fall out. Anthony

Hi Ant
Perception Without Awareness or P.W.A. is a recognised term I first became aware of perception without awareness through the work of psychologists Bornstein and Pittman. The first evidence of subliminal advertising effects can in Vickery’s advertising report on the effects of “drink Coca Cola” and “eat popcorn” messages. The research had serious flaws including the fact that there was no control group. In 1958 a Canadian broadcast network subliminally transmitted the messages “phone now” 352 times during a Sunday night TV show. Telephone calls did not rise during this period and no one called the station (Pratkanis, 1998). These results cast doubt on the subliminal thesis but do not disprove it. However, they certainly cast doubt on its effectiveness. Priming & Schemas: But there are some interesting studies on priming and schemas. Priming occurs when an earlier stimulus influences responses to a later stimulus. Schemas in their simplest terms are world views, stereotypes or archetypes. For example, the schema of a professor would be intelligence, and knowledgeable, while the schema of a football hooligan might be violent and stupid. In a study in 1998 those volunteers who were primed with a professor schema by asking volunteers to spend 5 minutes writing down a few sentences about the behaviour, appearance and lifestyle of a professor, whilst the other group did exactly the same for a football hooligan . Everyone was then asked about 40 trivial pursuit questions. The results showed that those primed with the professor schema had a 60% success rate vs. 46% primed with the hooligan! (Ap Dijksterhuis & Ad van Knippenberg). In 1996 Bargh and Chen primed a group by asking volunteers to unscramble several sentences in which the words were in the wrong order. Half the participants were shown mixed up sentences containing words relating to the elderly, such as “man’s was skin the wrinkled”. The other half of participants were shown the same mixed up sentence but the one word relating to the elderly was replaced with a word not associated with old age, such as “man’s was skin the smooth”. Once participant had carefully worked their way through the sentences and had been thanked for taking part the experimenter gave directions to the nearest set of elevators and secretly recorded how long it would take for the volunteers who were primed with the ‘old’ schema versus those who had been primed with the ‘young’ schema. Those who had been primed with the old schema took significantly longer than those who had been primed with the non-elderly sentences. How To Utilise in The Real World Another study showed that waitress who gave the bill attached to card with a joke on it vs. those who gave the bill attached to a card with an advertisement got bigger tips. In fact people tip more when the sun is shining or even when the waiters tell them the sun is shining! (Gueguen & Legoherel) So in control the Nation Derren was simply priming the audiences and then using suggestion and Kinesiology to make them sit to the chair. As for the begging effect he suggests that he was using priming but I believe it more likely to be hypnosis! I.e. the most generous donations were hypnotized before they met the beggar. However I use priming all the time. By simply getting people into positive states, talking about holidays etc, they will be much more friendly and agreeable! As always you can find out more on my website! Marc Marc Hogan |

Thanks Marc. I assumed it was Derren giving us some nonsense acronym to latch onto.
The new free paper on your site was great. Nice detailed description of your handshake induction and plenty of safety tips. Thanks. Anthony

Hi Ant
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I just wanted to show people how psychology, priming , and suggestion could be used to stick a persons hands together, but more importantly I've head about a lot of amateurs’ attempting the Handshake induction, and I really want to explain it properly and encourage them not to do it without the proper training.
