Hi,
I am contemplating adding a Hotot to my show. I have used Nederland Dwarfs, but never had or used a Hotot. Is there a temperament or personality difference? Max |

I have never owned a Hotot, but they are pretty! I have owned a lot of Netherlands. They are pretty, too! Tough decision..... The only difference I know of is the size. Hotots are normally slightly larger than Netherlands.

I raise rabbits and have several different breeds. The Hotot is slightly larger than a Netherland Dwarf (as mentioned by Regan). If you actually get the Dwarf Hotot, the size will be much closer to the Netherland Dwarf. As far as temperament, on an average, I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the 2 breeds. Although, you do have to keep in mind that rabbits are a lot like people in the fact that they each have their own personality. Personalities (even among the same breed of rabbit) can and do vary.

I agree, Regan, the Hotots are pretty. That was my interest. I have always liked my Netherland Dwarf, and I am looking to add one more.
Thanks for your input, greatscott. Max |

We use both, 2 Netherland Dwarfs and 2 Hotots.
The temperament is not any different that I can tell. We have one of each that is extremely friendly, and one of each that will take the occasional bite out of your hand. One cool thing with the nice Hotot (he's at my feet in the hotel room as I type this) to get him back into his travel cage, I just pretend to grab him. He runs back to the cage for his "safe place." As to size, one of our Netherlands is about 3 1/2 pounds and one is about 2 pounds. The Hotots are dwarfs and about 3 pounds each. For attractiveness, my wife and I prefer the Hotots. |

I realize that the Hotot and Netherlander Dwarf are small and will probably fit most gimmicks. Has anyone used a Holland Lop dwarf?

I currently have a Hotot, and she is wonderful to work with. I can't decide (when the time arrives) to get another Hottie or maybe a Lionshead bunny.

Our first rabbit was a Holland Lop Dwarf. He was a very friendly rabbit, and when he died we missed him greatly.
He probably would have weighed 5 to 6 pounds and was about twice the size of our Netherland and Hotot Dwarfs. |

Rob, I thought that Holland Lops only get about 1lb more than Netherland dwarfs? Can that be a problem for most gimmicks, such as a rabbit pan?

We got our first Netherland dwarf because the Lop dwarf would not fit into some of the production items we had. So yes, he was too large for some props, although I've never owned a rabbit pan specifically.
However, with our Netherlands being different sizes, we found that there were props that only the smaller would fit in. I guess it is like large stage illusions, you have to fit the prop to the individual rabbit. |

I haven't used a rabbit pan either, only a dove pan. It is my understanding that a rabbit pan is small and could fit a small Netherlands.
Your point is well taken, the prop has to fit the individual rabbit. I find both the Hotot and Holland Lop attractive and am contemplating adding one of them. |

I started out using a mini lop. They get up around 5-7 pounds. I was able to use it because, at the time, all my rabbit props were made to fit the rabbit I was working with. I currently use a rabbit pan all the time, and a true Holland lop will fit in it just fine. I currently use a mini rex in the rabbit pan. As long as the rabbit is under approximately 4 pounds, it should work in the rabbit pan.

I use a Hottot. Gotta love those black rings around the eyes.
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

I recently discovered a breed that looks similar to the hotot, but better (my opinion). This is a broken Vienna. It is a dwarf, so it is small. It has the ring around the eye, but it's gray instead of black. And, to top it off, it has BLUE eyes. They are very pretty rabbits.

I understand that the Broken Vienna can get to 8-12lbs. Although they are attractive, that may be more than most of us want to handle.

That is not true. The Vienna comes directly from the Netherland dwarf breed, so therefore, they only weigh between 2-4 pounds.

Here's a great site for comparing rabbits: http://www.jphpk.gov.my/English/rabbits.htm

Ok, according to that link, I apparently have been given the wrong name for the rabbit I referred to as a Vienna. The ones I have do stay small. Sorry.
