Hi,
I was wondering if any members can help with some ideas for a self-esteem show. The audience will be Grades 7-9 (11-13 yr olds)and it will be for about 15-20 mins at a school. The only ideas I have so far is to use Tim Sonafelt's trick 'Hero In You' - which is basically a transformation of 4 letter silks H-E-R-O into a 36-inch 'hero' silk -with an appropriate message. Also thought about using a torn and restored newspaper to talk about how life can seem 'torn' at times, but with perserverance, can become 'whole' again. I have also watched the Steve Taylor and Dave Risley videos on similar themes - but the target audience seems to be elementary school kids. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas to share, I'd really appreciate it. By the way, I have experience doing regular kid shows and this performance is about 6 weeks away so I have confidence that rehearsal time will be enough. |

Hi Bernard.
I was going to sugest Steve Taylor but I see you have him on your list. I used to do unequal ropes with a bit of a how to grow up and be like your peers type of wording. Then you pull the ropes to the same size telling them that if they follow the right path in growing up or stuff similar they will be as good as everyone else etc etc. But if they just allow themselvs to get stuck in a rutt or join gangs then they will always be the small guy in the group. (show ropes back to 3 sizes. It has been a long time since I did this Bernard but it was along those lines. Hope that has helped. Jimbo

Thanks very much for your help Jimmy - I haven't done Prof's Nightmare for a long long time - but that's a great idea you have! I appreciate your speedy reply!
I don't do much magic with messages - but I work at this school and my colleague asked for my help so I would like to. Our school is an all-girls school and the students are polite and well-behaved on the whole. They seem to like magic a lot - I started the school's first magic club this year and it was well-subscribed to! Anyway, I reckon 3-4 tricks should fill up the time slot! Perhaps I'll watch the Steve Taylor one again and adapt some of the effects for teenagers! |

Hey Bernard.... Take a look at Jim Kleefeld's You are a star program - http://www.jimkleefeld.com/star.html. There are some things that you can easily adapt to the show you are trying to do.
Cheers, B-Rad

Hey Bernard
Hope all is well with you my friend. How are the games coming on? I have nearly sold out now. and don't know if I can get more torches. You can also try the blendo routine that is on my DVD and use it to talk about individuals working as a team, then the silks all join together etc. Jimbo

the your a star program is listed on this page. Has anyone done any of these shows (or their own adaptations of them)? I love the idea of themed shows (esp. self-esteem and literacy), but I'm always scared of trying them. The few I've seen were very bad in that the message and the magic detracted from each other. Would you guys say these are examples of good theme shows? Or are there theme shows in the east bay I could check out coming up at a library?

Hi Bernard,
maybe have a look at the online shop from http://www.magic2motivate.com, there are lots of great ideas. Maybe show them the trick paper to bill - older kids love this trick - and then encourage them to learn this trick in the internet, give them a link. If they really spend 45 minutes in front of a mirror doing the trick again and again - then they can do the trick and this could help them to get more self-esteem, to find friends, ... Good luck for the show! Daniel |

I use the Soft Soap trick to illustrate Self Esteem. Using the three different stained handkerchiefs, I mention about how things in life can cause us to lose the esteem we have. Then, I pull each of the three clean handkerchiefs out explaining that having a good mindset and overcoming whatever problems we have that caused our esteem to be so low can wipe the slate clean and we can be proud of ourselves.
Give examples like volunteering for some worthy organizations, helping others in need, etc. This has worked well for me in past years. The only problem I have now with this is the supply of Soft Soap boxes. I cannot find refills. Glenn

Thanks Raffy.
I'm short on funds at the moment, but I think I'll get some of his stuff, I've always loved the idea of themed shows, esp. self-esteem and reading.

Also look at Steve Harmer's work - he does juggling and plate-spinning with the kids before atarting on a message
