I collect anything printed by Nelson Enterprises -- catalogues, pitch books, flyers for mentalists from all over the country -- as long as Nelson printed it, I want it.
I collect all sorts of pitch books and tick sheets, pre-WWII, mostly. I have no favourites -- they are all wonderful. I collect old readers' business cards. My favourite is a card of Madame Neergaard. the "Scientific Palmist" of San Francisco who testified in the Moxley competency trial of 1902. She stated that Mrs. Moxley was incompetent because while getting her hands read, she asked Madame Neergaard to find her a husband half her age. I collect anything by the Zancigs. I have two Zancigs items so precious to me that I will not name or describe them here because due to their nature they are not always recognized by magic collectors as being Zancigs items. If I described them to other mentalism collectors, their price would skyrocket, and I wouldn't be able to collect the whole set. Trust me, though, they are FANTASIC. I also collect anything by Alexander the Crystal Seer and have scored some nice items, including his made-over copies of New Thought books by William Walker Atkinson. He pasted his own potraits into these books and signed them, then sold them to his private reading clients. |

I don't know if they have any financial value since Max released Prism, but, still retaining great sentimental value, I have three of the original color series signed by Max to Bill. Not me unfortunately, but nonetheless, still signed to a Bill. I paid three dollars a piece for them in a "grab bag" box full of used books and such at an old magic store in Detroit that obviously had no idea what they were worth back then. But neither did I. Do I wish I had sold them before Prism? I honestly don't know.
Then there are my original copies of PS and PS2 signed with very personalized comments by Banachek, this time to this actual Bill! I also have number 14 of the limited edition of Obsidian Oblique and one of the limited editionss of The Mind and Magic of David Berglas which, at least in the past, were known to fetch a pretty penny. On the more unusual side, I have a very unique copy of a booktest put out by Ralph Monseratt called the Samurai Booktest. It is a beautifully bound, limited edition and contains 100 poems by 100 Japanese poets. The left hand pages are all attractive woodcuts. The poems are in Japanese and English and without knowing any Japanese you can still pronounce the titles and some words via phonetics. I've never seen anything else like this; it is very high quality and looks like something you'd purchase at an upper end museum. You can divine the drawings and the poems and the methods are brilliant. Making it all the more special, it was a gift from Ralph. To play with my head, he initially sent it without instructions! Finally, I have personalized John Riggs impression book made up with the small size of the DSM-IV-TR (the Mini-D, as it is called among psychologists and psychaitrists) which is one of the most evil books ever created. It is the manual by which psychiatric diagnoses are assigned to patients and probably has done more damage to modern human kind than almost any other book I can think of. It makes for a lovely booktest! |
