I will be performing a show later in October for a cub scout group. The event has some sort of theme in reference to Popcorn. The director want's me to do some sort of trick with popcorn. Make it appear, do a total trick, whatever. I have a dove pan (please shoot me if I have to use this) to make popcorn appear. But I would rather now use it. Thank you,
Jason |

Kevin James put out a trick that uses a popcorn box. You eat some popcorn from it and then pour your drink out of it or something like that.
Just an idea. You could quickly make a tip over box out of cardboard. The loads could be bags of popcorn that you could give out. |

Pop corn to chain of popcorn..(think christmas tree decoration)
Handfull of kernals to small bit of popcorn Comedy bit... Grab a handful of popcorn.. It is "put" into the other hand Woofle dust(actually the crushed popcorn) is sprinkled over the "hand with the popcorn.." Walllllllllaah..the popcorn has vanished. Salt vanish and pour works great and is actually more visible with popcorn salt. Thanks to someone out there in magic land that made that suggestion 20 plus years ago. Harris pass the popcorn please deutsch

This one is real easy to do. Show both sides of a movie poster, roll it up and pour out the popcorn from the rolled up poster.

Eleazar's "Pop-Corn Popper" from The Wizards' Journal #7. You start with a microwave package of popcorn kernals held between your hands. You hear them pop, you see the bag expanding, you can even smell the popcorn if you want. The bag is opened and you pull out a chain of popcorn and cranberries all ready for decorating the tree... or just pour out popcorn if you prefer the plain approach.

I considered gimmicking a bag to do a different routine, but I think popcorn would work....
Get 2 thermal bags at the grocery store, the kind lined with silver material, that keep items hot or cold as you travel. Cut one part to create a change bag out of the other one. they are by nature, puffy, so it should cover the fact that you have a load in it. It should be able to be shown empty. Dump in raw kernels, switch for your popped popcorn. The routine could be about a time machine, a portable magic popcorn popper - you can put a tube in the side and blow in it and it's a "hot air popper" - to make the sound of popping kernels, you could snap the bottom of the bag (like a brown paper bag) - then it moves and makes noise as if popping were happening in the bag. I have considered this homemade thermal bag as an "instant freezer" with ice pops, the kind that come 100 to a box unfrozen - load in a strip of frozen ones, in the show drop in the room temperature ones. |

I saw the video of the popcorn box (quite recently released, can't remember the details). It was rather obvious even on the video, that the box has a false bottom. There are better ways to achieve the same effect.
It wouldn't be hard to come up with a way to have a popcorn kernel instantly "pop" in your hand. For me, the big seller would be the sound FX. The ideal presentation would be: pour a load of kernels into a box, the sound of the corn popping, and the popcorn starts to pour over the sides of the box. Should be quite easy to come up with a method for that, without a false bottom. I think Spellbinder probably has it nailed with Eleazar's box (2 posts above), though I don't know the effect. I must say that I think properly done, this effect would be a fantastic addition to any kidshow. Great thread! Potty |

You could always fill an opaque black balloons with pop corn, hide it, then show another balloon fill this with the in popped corn. Blow up the balloon, tell them the hot air will pop the corn then as you go to get a needle or something sharp from your box swich it for the popped corn balloon. Pop the balloon and the popped pop corn pops out.
Now try saying that as a vent act. lol.

-Alter a Square Circle to make a similar effect to Wolf's ABC effect
-Get a bag of the Cub Scout popcorn and rig it to do a zombie effect. -Floating popcorn kernel -vanishing bowl of popcorn -or, my favorite, you could use a dove pan and...never mind, you probably already thought of that. |

Have you considered WHY the director wants you to use popcorn? Most likely because the scouts sell it as their fundraiser. Tie in the purpose of the popcorn with your routine. Make it a motivational presentation.
Popcorn transforms to money? perhaps there are nice prizes for high sellers, so make that connection of popcorn = prizes. Do this and you will impress the client much more than just doing a "trick" with popcorn. Wes Holly |

When I used to tour with Joe Eddie in the 1980's, I can remember him performing the popcorn box trick once or twice while we were stalling due to an animal problem or something of that nature. I believe he invented this effect while we were on the road. It went over well, so well in fact that I added it to my shows later down the road when I went back into magic. The gimmick is well made. I recommend carrying a bottle of water, and the single serving packets of Crystal light to mix backstage before the gig. The brighter colored the drink, the better.
I even came up with a kicker for the end of the trick that leaves me "clean" : after pouring out the popcorn, then producing the drink, I produce a dry, yellow silk hanky to dab on my face... :) Mark

The Pop secret video is interesting...quite clever. Takes a bit of prep. My only disappointment w the video was the lack of a performance scene or two. Still full of some good ideas.
