Just received Jay Sankey's "Descendant", recently, and am pretty tickled with my purchase.
Briefly, the effect is that you take an ordinary yellow pencil (Mine says Staples on it) and grasp the sharpened tip with your thumb and forefinger, then without hesitation or funny moves, you simply and cleanly slide the point to the MIDDLE of the pencil, and instantly hand it out for examination. The pencil has been permanently altered with the point now sitting smack in the center of the pencil. How magical is that, huh? I like this! Let me say, if you are not a fan of effects that are simple, visual quick and direct, then this is not for you. Personally, I LOVE effects where you take an ordinary everyday object and alter it's appearance then give it to the spectators to examine or keep. (Such as Michael Ammars Albo Card) This one fits the bill to a "t." I enjoy magic that can be done at a moments notice, and again this effect comes through with flying colors. No skill is required. You can literally perform it after opening the package. I know that has been said before, but in this case it's very true. The first time I showed it, I was given a big smile and the obligatory "Is that a magic pencil?" My response was to immediately (with no switch) toss them the pencil and let them examine it till the proverbial cows come home. They didn't have a clue. I like this effect because it is (groan) "right to the point". It takes all of three seconds to perform but can leave a lasting impression. Perfect for those times when they say "Show me a trick!" and you are rushed for time. (Which was my case the first time I did it) Jays effect saved the day for me. It instantly made me a real magician in several people's eyes. Pros and cons? I've just given several pros. Here are a few more: Jay provides several pencils and the gimmicks in the kit you receive. If you wish, you may give them away, but that costs money, of course. Reset is minimal. Visually stunning. Just plain fun to perform! No sweat no fuss, just pull it out of your pocket and do it anytime. Angles are not real bad. Uses an ordinary looking object that everyone knows about. The entire effect has a very organic feel to perform. Great if you enjoy corny gag lines like "This trick is pointless" etc The craftsmanship on these pencils is nonpareil! They are flawless. Kudos to Jay on this! You can make them yourself if you have Jays DVD "Kaleidoscope" but they are not easy to make. Cons? Here are a few: The gimmick when set up is kind of fragile and could easily become unset in your pocket. The pencil is very long, so requires larger pockets to carry around. (I feel Jay needs to also offer a shorter version) Before you pull it out to perform it, you have to have pre-checked to be sure the gimmick is still set and hasn't come apart in your pocket. The pencil itself is fragile with that thin spot in the middle, so if you have it in your back pocket, for instance, and sit on it, you are going to snap it in two. But even with those cons, it's still a wonderful, "Blaineish" effect for those who work on the streets. When I ordered, Jay included a copy of his "Dough "DVD, and that's a pretty good bargain, in my book. Great Effect. I love doing stuff with pencils. I'm working on a color changing pencil idea. Dough is fun to perform as well. I haven't done it in awhile but I use to perform it every week at the restaurant.
