I define Workers, as routines that are based not on difficulty, but on practicality, and entertainment value. They have to be good on angles, and can be done in a variety of situations. Workers will be the scope of the current New York Coin Magic Seminar, that is being held on Oct 24-25, in King of Prussia PA, just outside of Philadelphia. What kind of routines are you looking for that could be classified as Workers routines, or which routines do you already perform that fit into this category?

Hey Mark, good choices. I perform several different versions of coins across, based on performing situations. I have one for my formal show, one for a large group, and one for a more intimate performance. My choices depend on whether I am standing up, sitting down, performing for a small or large group, angles, etc. Gaffed coins certainly clean up a lot of sleights, and are easy to place into the Workers category. The most important facet of using gaffs, is to know how to ring them in, and get them out.
I will be teaching my own Workers version of C S B at the upcoming seminar, which uses no gaffed coins. I love the gaffed set, but have found my own version to be cleaner, and it allows me to do some things that I wasn't able to do with the gaffed version.
I always loved David Roth's purse and glass routine. In my opinion, it is one of the classics in coin magic. It is EXTREMELY well contructed, easy to follow, and very magical. However, I would not classify it as a Workers routine, due to the exactness of the performing conditions (sitting down in front of a group). I had always wanted to perform this standup, and will be releasing for the first time my own Workers version at the Seminar as well.
Roth will be also revealing a pet secret of his, that he has held back for years. It is a technique, that can be adapted to many of your own effects, that will enable them to become Workers. There will be Workers routines also taught by Gallo, DeCamps, Brewer, and Scotty York on the first day of the seminar, and on the second day, even more routines will be taught on the DVD set we will be filming. Many Café members have already signed up (spaces are filling up, so register soon if you want to attend), and I look forward to meeting them and sharing Workers magic!

What other routines would you want to learn or perform that would fit your needs as Workers rouines?

Coins to Glass
Coins to Spectator's Hand
Coins Thru Table
Coin Thru Glass (impromptu)
Coins Across (tabled)
Hanging Coins and their variants

These have been workers for me for a very long time. The first three I mentioned really tops my list.

Great choices, Rannie! Coins to Spectator's hands sounds like an ideal Workers routine, with spectator involvement!

It is Mike. It has been my go to worker for over 15 years. It has gone through several permutations over the years. I corresponded with GALLO regarding the one I use today over 2-3 years ago. I am sure the NYCM will come up with more varieties that will surely improve any magician's arsenal.

In a sit down situation, be it a formal presentation or just a casual "show me a tric" or " let me show you somethin" situation... coins thru table has always been a pleaser. We did a couple of them during your farewell party remember? These are real go to pieces.

The strength of the coins to spectator's hand is as you have said...INVOLVEMENT...spectator involvement. Without this...even the best sleight of hand artist will not have the best reaction. In this worker, the spectator gets to feel the weight of the coin. The object truly becomes a piece of matter that is tangible to them. with good layering of psychology, misdirection and motivated feints...it is truly an exciting piece of coin magic.

The beauty of the coins thru table is the age old mystery of solid passing thru solid. The coins may be borrowed and everything is above board. They hear the moment it touches the table as well as the moment it penetrates. How good can that be. This is close up at its finest.

I remember watching Roth a foot away during your Manila visit...when he did the hanging coins...which I knew backwards...I still could not believe my eyes. REMEMBER the loud scream?

I must not forget a SOLID Spellbound routine. Color changes are always great workers. This is visual close up magic.

I do have some workers if you are interested.

Best from Manila!

Rannie

PS I am going to miss yet another coinvention...oh man!!!!

For me coin transpositions get great audience reactions as well as the ones mentioned.

Mike says the trick should "have to be good on angles, and can be done in a variety of situations."

To me tricks with this criteria seems to narrow it down to 'in hand' and no extra props type effects.

I'd say 'in hand' C/S color changes and transpositions, Coins across using the spectators hands use of a ] ala Roth, Sankey's 'No Jacket Required', Roth's 'Down the Sleeve'.

I'm all for coins to glass and thru the table but if these two things are not available then what?

I also love Hanging Coins but there are are a couple of sensitive angles.

I would say that the definition of Workers routines can be modified, based on your own experiences. I use Stealth palm a lot, for small groups of people. But since it is a bit angle sensitive, I would not necessarily classify those tricks as Workers, even though they are succesful for me under the right situations. For larger groups, though, I would modify that sleight, substituting another so I can perform that trick for a larger group. It would then fall under MY definition of Workers. Props can certainly fall under the definition of Workers - purses, boxes, nothing wrong with that. I use the rattle purse all the time, and at the Seminar, I am sure Doug Brewer will be showing some of his own Workers, that use the Okito box.
What is your own criteria that makes a trick a Worker?

Jaz, A little imagination will supply you with everything you need. In general, there are 3 places you will be doing magic 1) your home 2)a friend or family members home 3) a bar or restaurant. Hopefully they will all have drinking glasses...they will probably be different in shape size and style so you just need to get a few different glasses to practice with. OK, there is the possibility you will be in a park or on the street but with a little thought, you can work around it!

Coins thru the table...this gets even easier...most anywhere you go there will be a table. If not...well just substitute a book, a serving tray, a small marker board, even a laptop for a table...just have a spectator hold it as you perform it...there are published and recorded methods for this. Lastly, again, if you are in the street or in a park...most of that stuff is still available...if not...knock some kid off his skate board and use that!!!

I hope this helps.

What a great idea! I was going to Central Park today, and there are a lot of kids on skateboards! (I hope they aren't bigger than me).

One more thing...as for hanging coins, the solution is simple. Go back Ramsay...he used F.P as opposed to E.G., this cuts down on angles! Also, try using a shell or slippery sam to clean up some otherwise difficult techniques!!!

Top thoughts there Mike!

I am a big fan of Spellbound and 3 fly as I can do them practically surrounded. Also many of those already mentioned.

You already said it Mike. Practical, not difficult, good on angles, and can be done in a variety of situations. With emphasis on "variety of situations". There are situations where a table or glass may not be available.

Certainly adjustments can and should be made for the situation.

Mike Gallo says, "A little imagination will supply you with everything you need."
Maybe not everything I need but your right on Mike.
I agree that most times there are 3 places we perform. Thanks.

Your own purse, handkerchiefs, pens or boxes are fine IMO.

So I'll add to the above criteria for workers is that the routines can be done in any situation with or without gaffs, etc. Having your own coins, purse, box or whatever being acceptable.

Michael, one of my favorites is Okito Clinker. I took your effect from KO Coin Magic and modified it to fit my style, and eliminated one of the coins, as well as the need to go under the table. I love this effect as a worker, and everyone always likes and has fun with it.

That's great to hear! I always loved using noise to add additional dimension to my magic. which is why I enjoy the rattle purse so much. for the people who don't have Knockout Coin Magic, this is an effect where three coins travel one at a time to an Okito box, but when they arrive in the box a "clink" is heard. So, if you don't go under the table, are you performing this stand up? That would make it a Workers routine!
