Another tip that I've learned is that the best tricks aren't always the ones with the hardest sleights and flashiest moves (there are plenty of crap tricks involving those as well). Sometimes simple is better.

It always gets good results and takes just about no sleight of hand at all. While you are working on all the knuckle busters, it would be good to find a few easy tricks that you can do for people. They will also help you practice performance, misdirection, etc. for when you have some harder sleights you have to hide in the future. |

Why not start out with sponge balls?
You'll learn quickly a lot of misdirection, timing, and audience management. Not to mention sleight of hand! But it's not hard sleight of hand. Some good rountines for sponges: Ben salinas Encylopedia of sponge ball magic Steve Darci spongeball toolkit Sponge (Not recommended for purpose, but it has a nice retention) Mark Wilsons book (mentioned earlier, the sponge thru pocket is killer) the SPONGE book is good too There's also a video tape out made by hampton ridge magic creations, on sponge ball tricks you can do. It's pretty good. Remember when doing sponge balls the audience will look where you look...I see a lot of beginners looking at the wrong hand, look at the hand the ball is 'supposed' to be in, BELIEVE the ball is in that hand and the audience will too. Ignore the other hand, it isn't there. Good luck |

I agree with understanding the classics. Read books, new and old, you will gain knowledge. As a wise man once said, " You can have knowledge with out wisdom but, you can not have wisdom with out knowledge. Read, Learn, and Enjoy!!!

I'll add to sponge balls the cups and balls routine...there is nothing that improve your magic more then the cups and balls routine, and that is simply because it have all ingredients of magic from varishing...to misdirection.
another advice would be to read "strong magic" as well.. |

He may even get paid to do it. Ed |

Hello there,
I am a newbie in coins and cards magic; I think there are some fundamental steps to follow when you start: reading the essential essays written by the greatest performers, such as JB BOBO, learning the most important sleights and performing alone - in front a mirror - everyday. It is so necessary to take time! I know so many people who are not comfortable with a routine because of their lack of knowledges. How did you start as a newbie? |

My input is - decide what you really like as magic, effects or an area that moves you (like coins),
then get a good beginner book on that (they can be found on the Café by searching), then take your time and learn one great effect really well, and that will fuel your continued learning. |
