Need help, folks. Got a show I've been working on hard. I'm doing a character bit with 3 short pieces in it. The 3rd, primary piece is a mentalism bit based on Optime-trick, sold by Bruce Kalver (click here for link with description).

This is about a 5-6 minute piece.

What I've decided to do is ask the spec to write their random letter on a piece of paper, place it in an envelope, seal the envelope, sit on it, and then proceed with the "eye test" method part of the trick. The justification for the pre-picked letter is the necessity to see if the "patient" is cheating and memorizing the charts. The deal is, the *bang* of the trick is the reveal of their thought of letter at the end of the routine.

When I'm all done with their "eye test," I do a little calculation, muttering random meaningless things, then come up with their predicted letter. Ta-Daaa!!!

Except, I don't think it's quite so "Ta-daa!!!" as I'm hoping. Can you all help with the reveal? Thanks!

I don't know the effect you have based yours on but is there anyway you could have a prediction? I sometimes have a spec come up on tage and as I help them up I stick a big piece of paper on their back that says "i will think of......" that the whole audience can see.

Once I have read their mind I then ask if there was any way I could have predicted it beforehand to which they alway reply NO. I then ask them to have a look on their back and its a big Ta Daaaa moment.

This any help?

I can't pre-predict the outcome, but have to wait until the end, as the method requires using the spec's answers to arrive at a conclusion. Hope this doesn't reveal too much.

How about using dual reality to get another spectator to reveal the letter?

DD,

In reading your concern about the reveal and the description of the effect, I would trust your instinct in that the result you are looking for might not be there. To me, the effect seems to accomplish with letters what a similar one does with numbers. For my style, the five eye charts create too much separation (not physically) between the selection of the letter and the reveal. Looking at Bruce's Web site, it seems like this effect would be part of his "Eye Don't Believe It" magic/science program. It seems like a natural fit for something like that.

For a three-effect show, I wouldn't use this as the closer. Perhaps in the second slot.

Just my two cents, with the recession and all, is worth even less than that.

Best wishes on your show.

OK - I think I've solved it. Part of the act involves having 2 other specs wrap the "patient" in a chain and lock him/her in (Hemingway Lock). Have the patient sit on their prediction. When we've completed the "eye test" write MY prediction down, seal it in another envelope and give it to the other spec (still on-stage) and then work the ask the "patient" to reveal their letter..."Oh, you can't! You're all tied up...." Work the Hemingway lock bit. After getting them out, have them THEN reveal their letter. "Hmmm, that's interesting. I've forgotten what I wrote while we were getting you all unwrapped. Would you open my envelope to reveal what I thought you'd say if you were not cheating at the test?" Ta-daaa!!!!

What do you think?
