This is a very subjective question, jusakarman. If you like cards, then try Chicago Opener (AKA Red Hot Mama). If you like coins, try Scotch & Soda or a 3 Fly Routine. If you like mentalism, then ... see what I mean? An opener should be very strong, and not too long. You may also consider doing something with flash paper...some sort of transformation effect. What do you like to do?

I don't do strolling table magic very often, but when I do, I open with "cap in bottle".

My opener is Chop Cup. My closer is Bill in Lemon, so the Chop Cup routine sets this up nicely by introducing the lemons.
If pushed for time, these might be the only two things I do. |

You can do any effect strong enough that will get their attention, still it is important that they like you right away.. so focus on attracting their attention and creating interest not only in the effect but also towards you as a cool guy who is about to entertain them. for 5 minutes or so. I also do the chop cup and bill in fruit.
Plus I start asking for the bill as soon as I get the chop cup out, and explain that I'm about to show them how the street scam works (the one with 3 cups and one ball)... this stuff gets them interested and they don't expect the finale. Bobc |

Hahahaha! Yes, I get through anything up to a couple of dozen a night. I usually have 2 prepared ones on me as I approach the table. Sometimes I get "Do that with my note" from someone else at the same table, so I can respond immediately.
The stock of lemons is kept at the service table or behind the bar or a similar location - it's just a net bag with a lot of lemons in it. I just grab one or two more on my way past. |

Chicago Opener or Ultimate Transpo depending on how much table space is available.

If you need to worry about table space, then you need to rethink your routines. If you are working in a restaurant, you should use the absolute minimum table space. Table space belongs to the guests and the restaurant.
If you are doing card transpositions, consider placing one card in the hands of one spectator, the other in the hands of another. If you know proper spectator control, you will know how to keep them from revealing the cards prematurely.

My version of David Stones one coin routine. I call it mine because it is almost exactly all the moves just not quite done as well !!! When you produce the jumbo coin it truly is priceless. It is also fast paced and establishes what you are there to do.
I totally disagree with card openers, but that is just me. Don't flame me. I've heard every side at least a dozen times. It is just a personal opinion. |

I have to say that in general I avoid card openers when table hopping or working behind the bar, unless they are return customers. Table hopping I often open with color changing knives or a trick of Doc Easton's with the nuts and bolts (I forget the name but it's basicly 2 in the hand, one in the pocket). Behind the bar, if I'm bartending, I've probably already vanished a napkin or bent and restored a spoon or something so I've already set the stage, so to speak. But I have been doing a verson of the Brunson Bowl routine and loading a deck of cards at the end, so I can go right in to some card work.
I agree with several of the other posts, an opener needs to be quick, visual, and fun. |

I find at some tables I need to open with something quick, visual, and fun. At others, I can open with something more cerebral and lengthy. As you gain experience, you'll better be able to size up each table. |

If I'm approaching a table with children, I carry a breakaway wand to use as an opener. I ask them if they want to help me do some magic and hold the wand while I get out my "magic ball" or whatever effect I plan on opening with. It almost never fails to get a laugh from virtually everyone at the table, and even people nearby. I've had kids get so tickled at the whole thing that half the restaurant wondered what was going on. I'm talking about families or groups of people who have children eating out with them.
Of course, if I'm approaching a table with just an elderly couple sitting there I don't usually break out the wand... As Kaylan said, this is a very subjective question, but that's my $.02.

I do an effect of David Stones where I tear a piece of napkin off, get my lighter, ignite it, WHOOSH! it goes up quickly leaving behind a piece of candy. (David does a dollar bill, but I like giving out the candy). The children really love it, but it always gets great reactions from adults and I have lots of comedy byplay worked in to it. Super fun.

I'm not sure about the legality of it, I haven't checked, but the manager knows I use it and is fine. I've done it for his kids as well. Of course that's just me, another restaurant or another city could change that.

I have had no issues with opening with card effects. However, I do believe that if you do open with a card effect, there should be some sort of preceding effect that introduces the cards. Let me explain.. Before I open with a card effect I use one of two preceding effects. The first is David Stone's flash deck appearence. That way, you produce a box of cards from fire and it grabs their attention. Or I use John Cornelious' shrinking card case. This way your not perceived as "Uncle Joe" who pulls out a pack to show you the 21 card trick.. This is just how I approach this. What works for me, may not work for you.
