This is a pretty nice routine after you show your own version for the spectators. Now, you can let them see your view and show 'em how it's done.... Anybody know who is this and where I can learn this version??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOBuaPes_yc It would be a bit better if he used Soft Coins, but it is still an amazing routine. .

I don't know, this looks like some sort of trick photograpy to me. I guess the way his hands first popped into view gives you the immediate feeling that some sort of editing might be in play. If not then as you say here Salby, it's amazing.

T Nelson Downs would be proud. It's a sort of "Backstage" of the VCA - bravo.

I'll second what Jon said. Looks like maybe someone read Curtis' "A hundreth pleasant conceipts" from The Buffet" section. I believe its there where he talks about giving a backstage view of a coin vanish.

No trick photography. Works fine for the camera, but for a spectator to actually get experience this view of the trick, the magician would have to stand closely behind the spectator and reach his arms around both sides of the spectator's head. I got the perfect name for it... "Reach-around 3 Fly".
I guess depending on who is doing the trick, and to whom it is being performed for, the specator will feel either very awkward, or enjoy the effect very much. That said, not sure how I would keep a specator from just leaning forward and peeking down into the hands to see how it is done. |

You could always perform it down low and call it "Bee's Knees" or something. In my Medieval Camp Wandering days I used to perform for kids hunkered over (or kneeling)with adult circled above. Where my belly hit my thighs proved to be a great spot for ditching and stealing things. If the angles were important I would use a knife for a wand and got some distance ;-)

This is where you set up a video camera and project the image onto a large screen. You step behind a panel which has a curtain and painted on and a backdrop which has an audience painted - like the stage version.

If presenting this to an audience larger than one, it's been done simply by turning around, and holding your hands above your head. You need to adjust your angles accordingly, it you're still using the DP, but there are a lot of ways to go in this position.
Wasn't a phase like this in the original U3F routine? First time I saw something like this was many, many years ago, at a convention. John Cornelius used to do the slow motion coin vanish like this. First he'd do the usual effect, then he'd turn around and "repeat" it, claiming that it looked just as amazing from his side. Back in the 80's Meyer Yedid published a similar idea, using this blocking to switch a bill while supposedly showing the audience how to do the "upside down George" trick. See Harry Lorayne's Best of Friends 2.

During this tilt a coin tansit occurs. This phase is pretty devastating because the spec cleanly sees only three coins from the back, only three coins from the front, and again only the coins from the back as the hands come back up. Neverthless a coin still travels. |

This would be great for those times on an airplane, when the passenger next to you wants to see something!

Earl Nelson, when he used to perform on a regular basis at the Magic Castle, performed his version of U3F with a phase where he turned around during the flight of one coin just to show that even from the back view things are mysterious. Every routine Earl performed was smooth and magical!

He is quite talented and very friendly; we spoke for a few weeks (around the time he posted the video you referenced). As for learning his routine, most if not all of it can be worked out just by watching the video -- especially if you are familiar with Harbottle's work. IMHO, the trickiest and most clever parts are his two uses of the BC (the last which appears to be a hybrid of a BC and Tenkai/Goshmann pinch), the rest is all DP and EG transfers. |

I have a Routine called Shackled -- a 3Fly type effect performed with your hands tied to the end of a stick so that your hands cannot touch each other. It could be done with two spectators holding your wrists, or you arms around a spectator and she holding your wrists -- but you had better know her pretty well.

There is a little Henry Hay going on here too.
I used this technique about 5 years ago to appear to duplicate some of the U3F phases with regular coins. Wasn't useful enough under normal working conditions to keep it up. |

Hello. Nice to meet you.
I'm Yota FUKUDA live in Japan and posted a video, Back view 3 fly. It's my first time to post a comment on this forum. I'm really surprised and happy because some people including great coin men who I know only in books and DVDs talk about my routine! Yes, a concept that a magician show his routine from behind is not new but worn-out, hence I never want to claim that this is my own novel idea. In poster's comment of YouTube, I explained who inspired me when I have constructed this routine. I think the best occasion to act Back view 3 fly is when you and your spectator are alone and sit side by side, for example at a bar. Thank you for watching my video! |
