Honestly its just another 3fly nothing new and inovated... In fact you can probably learn a better one from a book or video along with other routines for the same price. $25 is way too much for a manuscript on just one effect.

I watch True Fly as best I could from a layperson's stand point. I don't know if the magician side cut in at all, but to me the performance I saw was rushed, unatural, and ultimately didn't look to good. It is just another variation of this beaten to death effect.
Now, I am not one to sit here and be an arm chair critic or discourage people's work. I am all about supporting magicians work. This however, may be an exception. It seems to me that True Fly is something that was developed with little thought, has not been given any real world experience, was slapped into a manuscript, and shipped off to the dealers to make a quick buck. When people do that it bothers me. It is flooding the market with mediocre material that is thoughtless. Over the years Three Fly has off course been ripped apart and has been given variations in such great numbers that I think I saw Sting doing this effect at the Grammy's as he was waiting for the show to start (joke people...joke). True Fly is just another variation. I have seen nothing in this routine that has added to the effect or makes it different. Basically is just changes up the way it is done. And in this case, maybe worse. Variations I will recommend would be from Reed McClintock, Nathan Kranzo, Paul Wilson, and Chris Kenner's original. Andrew |

This obviously isn't worth that kind of money. Just go to R. Paul Wilson's site and you will be able to get an excellent 3Fly for US$10 ->now this is a good deal!

Does anyone consider the idea that if the hands are scant inches from each other, and the "fly" is does with a fast, violent motion that brings them even closer together, that laymen may just think you're throwing the coins across?
One of the strengths of a "closed" coins across is that the hands are closed. And far apart. Just my 2 cents. Best, Geoff

From watching the video, I think he does use an extra coin. It also looks too sloppy and suspicous. Symatrix says it uses no gimmicked coins, no hides?, no rubber band, no thread, no magnet. But he doesn't say no extra coin.I would definately stick to another version, where its been tested here and in the real world before trying to sell it.

Geoff I totally agree with you more than 100% if that is possible.
Throwing coins from one hand to the other is the most obvious method to a layperson. Why wouldn't they suspect that if the hands are coming perceivably close to one another, that you are tossing the coins across? I have always thought that a close handed version is much stronger than a visible version (sorry Jonathan). I will say that I think a visible coins across can be strengthened by a close handed version, like what Paul Wilson has recently published. Jason |

I honestly have not seen many three fly routines, so I don't really know what to look for. I must say though, when I watched the video I noticed the same things you did Geoff. There is one or two visual moments, but the hands do seem really, really close together for a lot of the time, expecially when the coins actually go across. I think it makes the effect a little bit weaker when the hands have to overlap in the spectator's field of vision. |

I agree about the hand proximity and extra hand motion diminishing the effect.
As to the strength of the effect, ask Bob Kohler about it. I recall how a very bright woman watched the second coin appear on one hand and just stopped and stared at the coin.... then a full five seconds later she looked up to meet my eyes, and resisted following my eyes to my left hand where the two coins were displayed and now only one remains. There is no equivalent moment in the classic 'Winged Silver' routine. Let's not even talk about the last coin.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I know I may get a controversial response to this, but I would like to make a point. What you have all done is something that is considered sinful in the magic world and every world. You've just taken a young man's ideas and completely trashed him, lowering his self-esteem, and not make him feel comfortable around magicians anymore. At conventions, this site, the what-not, he's going to have a bad reputation forever. You have completely neglected his feelings and have shown you are not true magicians.
What we must do as people is make everyone feel excepted, no matter what the circumstance. Sure, maybe selling his effect at 25 bucks is too much. But, that still doesn't mean you should completely bash him. We should talk to him nicely, and tell him how to improve the effect. How to make it good before he sells it, or NICELY tell him why it won't hit the market. Remember, we all are people. Being nice to someone doesn't only make them feel good, it makes you feel good. We should all keep this goal as magicians. He may be afraid to attend these forums with his name all trashed all over the place. Remember, we are all people. We are all humans. Material possession do not matter. It's the true innner feelings of our people...that do. Thank you all, Greg Bornstein |
