Drew McAdam sent this to me by email. He said he somehow found this funny. It's evidently not. I knew that straight away. And then..., something happened. I started giggling... then laughing aloud. But I absolutely know it's not funny. Can anyone explain why? Is it somehow linked to mentalism? It would be extremely helpful to both myself and Drew. Thank you in anticipation.

Bobser,
IMHO its related to psychology. I am no psychologist (I'm a banker), but I believe that what we laugh at reveals something we value on some level. this can be applied to socially unacceptable behaviours biologically(remember everyone laughing at the kid stands up(sits down) and accidently farts in class), awkwardness (Napolean Dynamite and his dance at the end). In the fart example, we laugh cuz that is embarrassing(unacceptable), and the farter is now socially reprimanded for the act via laughter. For the movie Napolean Dynamite, we laugh because the dancing is so silly we wouldn't conceive doing that since we would be socially outcasted (unaccepted) but this example also shows that he followed what he enjoyed and didn't surrender to social constraints in front of ridicule (perseverence another trade we admire and want) thusly we laugh for this situation for both the awkwardness of the situation and the fact that we value the perseverence in adversity. Laughter during/after the perseverence of adversity(stressor) can be easily seen with the haunted house, horror film, roller coaster, someone in an awkward situation. people laugh when they are uncomfortable as a reaction to the uncomfort to alleviate this uncomfort. back to the youtube clip, lets remember that we are looking back at titanic from a historical perspective or even if only from the movie. we KNOW the outcome. thusly, an accelerated plotline highlighting the obvious seems humourous. because it is obvious to us that the ship will sink (though not funny) for the statement that "this ship can't sink" juxtaposes the obvious truth it will sink. Kind of like: Guess what? WHAT????? CHICKEN BUT!!! how many of you actually laughed at the above. its stupid, but we laugh becuase of its stupidity, showing we value intelligence. we all know the outcome. so to summerize, we value observation, known outcomes, facts, and percieved reality, thus seeing someone stating some absurdity (the ship won't sink) causes us to laugh since it goes against what we value. again just my thoughts, Hope this helps, isid0re |

Lexa! Stop! Stop! Stop!Sobbing now, uncontrollably. LMAO. Absolutely loved it.
I'm gonna contact Drew and get him in here to have a look at these. I wonder what it's called this special kind of humour we've found. Should we start a club? Should we have a name for it?

Hahahahahaha I love Star Wars! This made my day. I know that's not exactly the point of the thread, and I apologise for not being able to shed any light, but I definitely appreciate it! Haha.

Oh man, these ARE funny. 'The Lord of the Rings' in 5 seconds and 'The Exorcist' in 5 seconds were freakin' hilarious.
Nice thread. I think these are funny because they're true. That IS what the movies were like. Approaching it in 5 seconds is just funny (to me) because the clips sum it up so well.

When I first came across this I sent it out to several of my friends - of which Bobser is possibly the oldest.
Amother mate wrote back syaing "Oh mt Gawd, that is soooooo you!" You know, I did the same sort of thing once with a milkbottle down the back of an old metal radiator in the English class when I was at school. I had some fishing line tied to it, (interestingly, from the same reel I mentione in my book with the early attempt at a "ghost touch effect"... and every time the teacher started to talk, I tugged the line... There was this horrible CLANG CLANG BONG!!! sound and she had to stop and start again... I kept it going for ages. Unfortunately, the bottle dislodged itself and fell out from behind the radiator with a clunk. She picked it up and started following the fishing line. Just as she got up the back of the class, I handed my end of the line to my chum at the next desk, said "Here, hold this a minute" then sat back, folded my arms and looked innocent. See? It's the jazz of mentalism. And the humour we all share. Drew |

Funniest line on here... Bobsr's "IsidOre thank you. Did you say you were a banker?"
And for those of you who don't get it... sorry. Trust me, it IS funny. And yet gloriously cruel. |

Wow. The Vader vid that started this thread brought back a brilliant memory. Does anyone remember the scene in the Deer Hunter where they've been out hunting and they keep driving off leaving their mate behind... then they stop and reverse and just as he is about to get into the car they drive off again?
Years ago when I was at college we kinda re-enacted the scene in the hills outside Manchester torturing a mate so much he wouldn't speak to us for days. There was one moment when he was sat at the side of the road really genuinely cross and refusing to even approach the car and we were all shouting to him to get in and swearing that we honestly weren't going to drive off again when I really wondered if we were stuck there forever. And the driver, Larry, still drove off without him one more time. This is making me weep with laughter as I remember it. thanks s
