Ok - well the bottom line is that you're not going to be like Derren so don't try.
If you pay your dues a little and learn the basics, rather than rushing out to buy the next greatest 'trick' two things will happen. 1. People will give you a little more respect and, more importantly 2. You'll learn how to do the sort of things Derren does and be able to freak people out (I'm assuming that's your goal here?)

Dude, 17!!! You have so much time!! I wish I was in your shoes. With the resources you have available you'll be able to kill... some day. Not today, maybe not tomorrow, but sooner than you expect... if you put in the work.
You've got great books, fantastic ebooks, wonderful DVDs, and the all-powerful SEARCH button in The Café. Oh, man would I like to be you. When I was starting out I had to do tons of research to find one good thing. I didn't have anyone who could review anything and tell me upfront if it was something I should get. I got lucky and in my very early teens became friends with Paul Diamond and Fantasio. The taught me the TRUE way to go about this field. If you start TODAY and start getting the classics and READING them and TRYING out all the effects, you'll be far ahead of the game. If TODAY you start getting the really great DVDs in mentalism like anything from Osterlind, Riggs or Maven, you'll.... well, you'll explode with knowledge. If you do all that starting TODAY then you'll be surprised when you reach the ripe old age of 20 of how great a performer you will have become. You won't see those years as wasted. Those years will be your training ground and then you'll have others asking you what is your SECRET. Don't waste any time. Go get some of the good books and start reading. Thank me three years from now when you realize how good you have become. Greg

Tom. There are many ways to obtain written info without using the CT. I myself don't use it as it doesn't fit my style. There are peeks, switches, steals, impression pads, forces, pencil reading, guesswork, linguistics, suggestion and gimmicks to aid you in this field.
I myself work with index card and a stealthy wallet and nothing else. I recommend getting the richard osterlind dvds as you will learn some classic effects and see how well they play out to an audience. 13 steps to mentalism is a must if you are seriouss about this and try to remember whats its like to be a spectator again who knows nothing of our methods My first mentalism effect I ever bought I initially hated due to the method but I use it constantly as my opener when doing walkaround due to the reactions it gets When we seem like we are being mean we are giving you tough love. Hope this helps. M |

I have decided that I shall add mentalism to my arsenal, as I think it will work well with my love for levitation/PK. The hardest part for me is to build up an idea of what sort of magician I want to be... I want to be able to make money in some form or other some day (so "blaineing" is a no no) and so I think this almost requires me to have a particular "thing". Like some people are mentalists, and JUST mentalists, and almost every trick they do is a prediction trick. Other magicians like Yigal do levitation's for a living. I sometimes wonder if my multiple personalities make it harder to decide what to "specalize" in, or if I am just confused. Either way, I am deffinetly going to learn basic mentalism. (and yes, incase your wondering, I ordered 13 steps )

Why do you want to be this super powerful mentalist when you do not even have a strong foundation in your act? Do you think Derren doesn't use CT? The guys told you about it here... If he is not using CT, he is using other methods like Pre-show. Bottom line, try to build your foundation first before hoping to be like a Max Maven or Derren Brown...
Regarding CT, I think you should search for some book that John Riggs wrote that justified why you should tear it. On the idea of many mentalism stuff today that are con, true there are a lot of junk, but if you know what to search you fill find powerful materials. I seldom post on topics but I read what others are talking about and try to learn from there. By the way, a lot of Café members here do have great mentalism materials. Just have patience and learn the basics. This will open your eyes to more alternatives in what you want. Is CT required for mentalist? no, Same as Matthew Shepherd, I use peeks or Billet switches to obtain info. Get your 13th step and you will see why we keep saying you should read it. |

Once you have those principles in your head (which you will never, ever COMPLETELY master because you'll always be improving) see if you don't even "do a trick" but just jazz, using the principles. Speaking of which, don't let some of the effects in Corinda's book get you down. Some of them aren't that good; they're really there to illustrate the principles.
