I believe...
I read... I use several approaches to give my clients a fullfilling and entertaining experience... Maya Angelou ( SP? ) Put it best... "I've learned people will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel..." I think if more of us ( skeptics and believers ) focused on this we would be BETTER at what we do... A new forum would simply turn into a hateful and spite filled breeding ground for the type of confrontational BS that pollutes these boards and is equally driven by skeptics AND believers. You see it here already. J

Thanks for agreeing on the my first point about Carl Jung
Your second statement is in line with many Psuedo-Skeptics that define Psychic as being Omniscient and God like. This strawman argument is too obvious to waste anyones time on. Secondly ... The cards only "Appear" to be chosen at random. Fate, Destiny, and the predestination of all things must be taken into account. It's the Cause-Effect that drives all time to it's eventual outcome. I hope that makes this clearer for you Derek No problem... Dave

In order for me to form an opinion of a pseudo-skeptic you'll have to define it. Likewise with your definition of Psychic. Everyone has a different perception of what a psychic is, what's yours? God (I don't believe in God) gave us free will, yet we are apparently at the mercy of destiny, predestination and fate. How do these constraints fit with you personal belief system? Thanks for your views Derek |

Guys, there is an assumption being made here that a seperate forum on readings would lead to nothing but war. I beg to disagree.
Hypnotism is an important sub-division of mentalism. There is a seperate forum on hypnotism here, and several of the contributors (myself included) do not believe in hypnotic trance. Yet we peacefully co-exist with the believers, and share experiences, tips, and stories. I always glance at the posts on this Penny for your Thoughts section, but I rarely bother reading them. I am only really interested in reading, and reading-related topics. The rest doesn't interest me, and I do not contribute. Although I have no belief in anything psychic or supernatural I am quite happy to share experiences with everyone. Such a forum would be a great addition to this site.

Tony - Thanks for you message. Perhaps we are worrying about flame wars too much. I don't want to have the expectation of "conflict" to affect our decisions.
Personally, I think Penny is "too big" - there's a lot of content on it (which is great) but I'd like to see a more focused (and friendly) area. I am really interested in readings and reading-related topics and it seems like a logical thematic break for Penny. Perhaps we should just put it to a vote, create it (if the vote is positive), and then decide if there needs to be membership or moderation rules... Lets all think positive! |

I agree. I'm all for sharing cold-reading experiences, knowledge, suggestions and tips. I would love (in all seriousness) to hear from psychics and how THEY get their information during a reading. We all have a lot to learn.

Honestly, the call is not ours, it is Steve's. And seeing the aggravation and headaches he just went through, I'm not sure it is something he wants to attempt at this time. I could be wrong though.
On a related note, I did set up a forum along these lines in May for the publication I posted about back in 2007, One Eye Open. If Steve does not wish to create a readers forum, I can go active, but only if Steve does not want to do so here. There are also several other reader friendly forums run by members here that are wonderful. They are private, but I'm sure if you have a real interest and state that here, someone may contact you about them. (I don't feel it is my right to do so.) Tony |

No idea. There are other places away from the Café that work very well for this and because they have slightly tougher moderation and are vaguely selective no one feels like they're being judged so much. I for one wouldn't be too comfortable with these kinds of discussions on the Café as quite simply they're too readily available for the public to read. No matter how you frame it, readings are a sensitive subject and it's just not worth the hassle of wondering if you're going to get jumped - if you can't feel comfortable then you're just not going to write what you think, so what's the point. I don't think that having a separate place on the Café for these conversations would make them any better than they are in Penny or Inner, so again, is there a point?

Its a nice thought, but the egos of some, and the gangs that run riot on this place - nah...too much hassle I reckon...
shame though...

Well if any of the people who run those boards for readers, fortune tellers etc. read this post I, for one, would like you to know I'm very interested in joining. Please PM me if you can offer an invitation.
Thanks, Rocky, (Tom)

As far as the P.E.A. is concerned, the operative word is "entertainer." That is what (at least in theory) separates those who provide readings "for entertainment purposes" from the "cross my palm with silver gypsy fortune-tellers" and "mediums" like John Edward, Sylvia Browne, et al -- who themselves are in an even different category than the "Spiritualists" (with a capital "S" as in the recognized religious sect). What I find bothersome on the Café is that many subscribers seem to lump these distinctly different disciplines (i.e., "psychics," "mediums" and "mentalists") all together under the heading of mentalism. The result often leads to arguments caused more by semantic confusion than matters of ethics, method, technique or presentation so, in effect, we all presently find ourselves in the third room that I suggested (only partially tongue-in-cheek) as "for those who don't understand the difference."
